How to Protect an LCD Camera
The Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screen may be the most vulnerable component on a digital camera. The screen can scratch easily if almost any pointed object drags across the surface, marring visibility. Deep scratches may not only make it difficult to view the screen but may impair the camera's performance as well as ruin its appearance. A variety of products for protecting the LCD screen and the digital camera itself are available at photography stores.

Store the camera in a padded case when not in use. A form-fitting case that conforms to the contours of the camera will minimize potential damage from vibrations. Supplement the protection afforded by an inexpensive case by wrapping the camera in a hand towel, then storing the camera in the case.

Place camera accessories, including battery packs, in a separate compartment away from the main storage compartment for the camera.

Install a plastic protection cover over the camera's LCD screen. This rectangle of clear plastic material fits over the LCD screen and clings in place without adhesives. Available at camera stores, the shield can be removed by peeling off from a corner and replaced in seconds by pressing flat against the LCD screen.

Clean the LCD only with camera lens cleaning papers or lint-free cloths, which are designed to prevent scratching. Never use the back of a shirt, a fingertip or any other hasty cleaning technique to remove smudges from an LCD.

Remove the battery pack or individual batteries, depending on the camera model, from the digital camera if it will not be used for more than a week. Batteries can leak, potentially ruining the camera.
