How Does a Stylus Pen Work?

    • The Ballpoint Pen Side
    • One defining characteristic of a stylus pen is that it has a working ink pen. Many stylus pens use ballpoint technology. To make the pen work, ink is loaded into a pressurized tube capped on one end and sealed by a small metal roller ball on the other. The roller ball acts as a cap of its own, sealing off the end of the ink tube to keep the ink fresh and retained in the cylinder. When the user writes with the pen side of the stylus, the roller ball is pressed against a writing surface such a paper or fabric. As the ball moves along the writing surface, it rotates to leave a trail of ink. When the pen is not in use, it can be capped to prevent unintentional marks.
    • Dual Purposes
    • When the cap is removed and placed over the stylus end (exposing the roller ball for writing), the cap provides additional weight to the end of the pen for proper balance and an improved writing experience. When the ink portion of the stylus is not in use, the cap is placed over the roller ball to prevent unintentional marks. In addition, the cap guards against damage to the roller ball which, in some situations, can render the ink portion of the stylus pen useless.
    • The Stylus End
    • Opposite the roller ball mechanism is the actual stylus device. In most cases, the stylus is little more than a protruding rubber or plastic nub, though some stylus instruments designed to work with multi-touch devices (like the Apple iPhone or the Samsung Instinct) may have a capacitive material that creates a surface similar to human skin. The protruding stylus is used as a substitute for a finger when tapping touch-screen devices, and is specially designed to not scratch or leave marks on electronic screens. Depending on the design, the stylus may be covered by the cap when not in use, or it may protrude at all times.

How to Use a Stylus Pen?

A stylus pen is a tool specially designed for electronic devices that have touch screens, including tablet computers and cell phones. It functions just like an ink pen without the mess of ink. Stylus pens are usually made of plastic and have soft rubber or silicone tips that won't scratch or damage the surface of a touch screen. On a touch-screen device, a stylus pen can open files, move documents, enter data and draw.

    • Touch the tip of the stylus to a program, folder or document on the touch screen.
    • Pull the stylus away. This method is known as "tapping." Tapping is used to open programs, folders and documents. Tapping is also used to enter characters on the touch screen's keyboard.
    • Touch and hold the tip of the stylus to a program, folder or document on the touch screen.
    • Move the stylus around while keeping the tip pressed against the touch screen to drag items around the screen. Lift the stylus away from the touch screen when the object is moved to your desired location. This method is known as "dragging." Dragging is used to move objects around a desktop, drag files into a different folder and to draw.

This stylus works perfectly with my Nintendo. It is infinitely better than the one which I had previously purchased - the rubbery tip is more stable and precise, the shaft is thicker and easier to hold, and the clip seems much more likely to hold up.
Using it with the "Penultimate" app, my handwriting has never looked so good! Also- gives me almost perfect results with the "Writepad" handwriting recognition software, which I had pretty much abandoned until this arrived. I'm thrilled!

This is an excellent stylus. I don't often use a stylus with my Nintendo- but did have a pogo sketch ten one for sketching. This stylus is a much more practical device for normal sized hands. The pogo stylus is thin, small, and much to light - I would get cramps in my hand with using it for more than five minutes or so.
With the price point of both being so close, unless you need a very small stylus, or you have small hands - I'd suggest looking at the plastic stylus to use with your Nintendo.

This is the best very drawing stylus made for the Nintendo. The size, pressure, conductivity and heft are just right. If only the little hoe at the top had been larger I might have been able to put it on a chain and not lose it! Guess I'll order another and a backup.

I had previously purchased a $5-6 stylus on Amazon and was supremely disappointed with the quality, and it just wouldn't work properly on my Nintendo. This stylus on the other hand is of great quality and works MUCH better on my Nintendo. Nice tip with rolls easily on the screen, and I have never had any incorrect spelling entries so far on my screen. Nice stylish product that works better than expected. Recommended for sure!

Away on a conference, it turned out that I had forgotten my stylus, so grudgingly I bought a new one - this plastic stylus. I could not believe what an improvement it was. Although I was certainly not unhappy with the pogo stick, it sometimes had the habit of not picking up my input, and the writing (I mainly use the stylus to make notes on my Nintendo with Penultimate) was not always what it ought to be. This is so much better. It is slightly heavier, but that makes it a better rather than a worse writing implement. More importantly, it allows you to draw much thinner lines than the pogo did. The best of the stylus.

I bought a Pogo Stylus to use with my new Nintendo as I have long nails and cannot "type" correctly on the phone. The Pogo Stylus is okay but the tip is flattening out quickly. Upon reading a review of the others. I decided to try it and I'm glad I did. I do not have to press down as much as I did with the other stylus and I love the quality and appearance. Try it; I'm sure you'll like it too! Worth the extra cost.

I bought a Pogo Sketch to use with my Nintendo and at first I was elated. However, I used the pen quite a bit with the Penultimate app. In a few weeks the tip had flattened to the point that metal was starting to scrape the screen. I then ordred this plastic stylus and realized that I had been eating hamburger before when I could have had steak. The Capacitive Stylus tip is much harder and will last many months (years) longer than the Pogo. The harder tip also produces less friction so it is much smoother. I have a protective screen on my Nintendo is it works great with it. It is kinda expensive, but in the end you'll be glad that you spent the extra money.

If you're really wanting a stylus for your Nintendo, I would recommend this one. Considering the limited number of Nintendo styli on the market, this one's pretty good. It is comfortable to use/write with and has a decent weight to it (seems to be made from a semi-thick tube of aluminum). Due to Nintendo screen technology, you'll need to press a little bit on the stylus to ensure that there is enough surface area on the screen. My opinion: this will work for now but if you want a really good writing device, keep an eye out for future Nintendo and styli developments.

I bought this product for my 10 year old daughter. It came within a week of purchasing and according to my daughter fits better into her DS than the original. She loves to change out the colors depending on her mood.
