What is a Digital Video Recorder?

3GP Video Format Mini DVR with SD Card GSCA-GD2704

    • A digital video recorder (DVR) or personal video recorder (PVR) is a consumer electronics device or application software that records video in a digital format to a disk drive, USB flash drive, SD memory card or other mass storage device (local or networked). The term includes set-top boxes with recording facility, portable media players (PMP) with recording facility, recorders (PMR as camcorders that record onto memory cards) and software for personal computers which enables video capture and playback to and from disk. Today some television sets even come with digital video-recording facilities integrated from the factory; LG was first to launch one in 2007

How Does a Video Recorder Work?

How a Digital Video Recorder Works:

    • Just as DVDs have replaced videocassettes, digital video recorders are replacing video cassette recorders. Though VCRs can be made compatible to record digital TV signals, digital video recorders come ready to do it. DVRs record their images onto a hard drive that will hold around 40 hours of video. It is essentially a computer whose sole function is to record and playback digital video

The Need for a DVR Tuner:

    • A DVR tuner receives and decodes the digital signal, but you need to make sure it can work with however you receive their TV signal (regular TV, cable or satellite). Some signal providers will make you use their equipment to record TV. The signal is then stored on the hard drive, and sent to the TV screen if you want to view the images

    The DVR:

    • With a DVR, you can watch a recording while recording something different. If you have two DVR tuners, you can watch one channel and record what is on a different channel. The most interesting aspect of a DVR is that it will pause a program being broadcast, and allow you to restart it later. This is because the hard drive is constantly recording, so once you restart a paused program, you are watching a recording, rather than the live broadcast. Because of this constant recording, you can also rewind a program that is already in progress if you missed something

    No Cassettes:

    • Unlike a VCR, no cassette is needed to store your programs. The disadvantage is that once the hard drive is full, you'll need to delete something to free up room

    The On-Screen Guide:

    • Other features of DVRs are the on-screen guides that help you find the programs you want to record. Once you find a program to record, you select it using a remote-control device. When the program is broadcast, the DVR will save the program onto the hard drive. One the program is finished recording, you'll see the program listed on the saved programs list on the on-screen guide. The on-screen guide also allows you to delete unwanted programs to free up space on your hard drive

How to Download a Video From a DVR?

    • Hook your DVR up to your computer using a pass-through device. The simplest pass-through device is a video capture device, which is a small unit with audio-video cords at one end and a USB cord at the other. Connect the audio-video cords on the device to the "Audio Out" and "Video Out" ports on the back of the DVR and the USB cord to any open USB port on your computer
    • Launch the video editing software on your computer. Video editing software, such as iMovie, Movie Maker and Adobe Premiere, has the ability to capture video footage from external sources
    • Go to the "File" menu in the video editing program and select "Capture" or "Import" to open the program's capturing feature. If you are given choices to simply "Import" or to "Import from an external device," choose the "external device" option
    • Click the "Start Capture" or "Start Import" button in the video editing software. Begin playing the video on the DVR that you want to download to your computer
    • Press the "Stop Capture" or "Stop Import" button in the video editing software to stop capturing when the video is done playing on the DVR. Click "Finish" or "Save" if the option is provided
    • Enter a name for the video capture when prompted. Many programs prompt you to enter a file name after capturing video. Others may prompt you before you begin capturing. This is the name that the downloaded video file is saved under on your hard drive

    Tips & Warnings:

    • Some digital video cameras have the ability to be used as pass-through devices in place of a video capture device. To connect the DVR to the computer through a digital video camera, use the audio-video to mini-jack cord that came with the camera to connect the "Video Out" and "Audio Out" ports on the DVR to the mini-jack input on the camera, then use the firewire or i-link cord provided with the camera to connect the camera's firewire port to the computer's firewire port

    Applications:

    Mini DVR Recorder

    Examples of DVR:

    SD Card DVR

    • Integrated LCD DVR

    DVR SD Card

    • VESA Compatible DVR

    TV Recording:

    • TV DVRs generally uses the electronic programming guide (EPG)

    Security:

    • Digital video recorders configured for physical security applications record video signals from closed circuit television cameras for detection and documentation purposes. Many are designed to record audio as well. DVRs have evolved into devices that are feature rich and provide services that exceed the simple recording of video images that was previously done through VCRs. A DVR CCTV system provides a multitude of advanced functions over VCR technology including video searches by event, time, date and camera. There is also much more control over quality and frame rate allowing disk space usage to be optimized and the DVR can also be set to overwrite the oldest security footage should the disk become full. In some DVR security systems remote access to security footage using a PC can also be achieved by connecting the DVR to a LAN network or the internet. videoNEXT also makes a NVR surveillance application for the Mac OS X. Some of the latest professional digital video recorders include video analytics firmware, to enable functionality such as 'virtual tripwire' or even the detection of abandoned objects on the scene
    • Security DVRs may be categorized as being either PC based or embedded. A PC based DVR's architecture is a classical personal computer with video capture cards designed to capture video images. An embedded type DVR is specifically designed as a digital video recorder with its operating system and application software contained in firmware or read only memory

    Privacy Concerns:

    • Some digital video recorders which are designed to send information to a service provider over a telephone line, Internet, (or any other way) can gather and send real-time data on users' viewing habits

    • 1 x Mini DVR with SD Card

Great video quality. I got it on Thursday and placed it on my dash the first few trips out. Then on Sunday, I just made a quick trip out without it....a car wreck occurred right in front of me and damaged my vehicle. I don't leave home without it now.

This camera is amazing for the size it is, its not the best HD quality Audio/video , but what do you expect for what? A little dollars, per file recording structure is annoying. Its a good deal for that price.

I use this thing to keep tabs in my house when the plumber or electrician is in the house. I has good video and sound quality in a very small package. Plus it records about two hours worth of video which is about all you can really look over without falling asleep.

The seller had to send me two because I could not get my PC to recognize the first one. The second one I got has great quality, both video and audio. Mine is to record aerial video on my rc plane so I don't care to stick it in my pocket or anything. I recommend it.

I'm giving this cam four stars based upon its very good quality of images.

Others have reviewed the cam and have commented on the audio capabilities of it. They're not good. But, as I said, I expected that.

I bought this because it was small enough to clip on my body armor. The Veho held up to the knocking and bumping of jumping in and out of aircraft and on ground movement. This took some great footage. Sound quality is OK. But then again, if you want perfection you'll need to get something bigger and more expensive.

This tiny camcorder is great. I used it on a fishing trip and it worked great. Make sure to upgrade the card to enough space. I will be taking it on my archery hunt in Iowa.
