NiMH Vs. Lithium Rechargeable Batteries
- Misconceptions: Many people confuse lithium batteries, which are not rechargeable, with lithium-ion batteries, which are rechargeable. No comparison exists for size AA NiMH batteries and lithium batteries. However, a comparison of the sizes of NiMH and lithium-ion batteries used in manufacturing is possible
- Identification: NiMH batteries use hydrogen from rare-earth metals such as lanthanum, according to Electropedia.org. Lithium-ion batteries use lithium, the lightest metal, dissolved in carbon to deliver power. Although the first lithium batteries used pure lithium, most industries have switched to a lithium composite material
- Features: Compared with the traditional alkaline battery, NiMH and lithium-ion rechargeable batteries offer a much higher energy capacity. NiMH can deliver 1,300 to 2,900 milliamperes per hour in a AA battery, depending on the manufacturer, according to Michael Bluejay. Each lithium-ion cell delivers about 1,000 milliamperes per hour. Both kinds are resistant to the "memory effect," where the battery "remembers" less than 100 percent of the charge
- Disadvantages: Lithium-ion batteries are only available in the product for their intended use -- usually high-powered electronics, such as laptops -- or they contain special chargers often included with the product, according to Electropedia.org. In addition, they may not offer a cost benefit over alkaline batteries in high-powered applications. NiMH batteries are excellent for most uses, except for smoke detectors and flashlights. NiMH batteries lose about 25 percent of their charge each month. Thus, lithium and lithium-ion batteries are better for emergency equipment
- Potential: Industries are switching to lithium-ion batteries, especially in hybrid vehicles, according to the Scientists and Engineers for America Action Fund. Part of this shift has occurred because of the difficulty that businesses find in receiving a license to the NiMH patent. Another reason that hybrid manufacturers give for switching to lithium-ion is its light weight, which increases fuel efficiency
How to Improve the Capacity of a NiMH Battery?
- Perform "Battery Conditioning". Fully discharge and then fully charge your battery for 5 cycles to remove any "memory" effects and return the battery to optimal capacity
- Store batteries in a freezer or refrigerator when not in use. Rechargeable batteries lose charge when not in use, as much as 20% in the first 24 hours after charge. The colder the batteries, the slower they will lose charge
- Refrain from storing your batteries for longer than a couple days between charging and use for best capacity
What Is a NiMH Rechargeable Battery:

Nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries offer long life and provide ample power for demanding uses such as in digital cameras.- History: Nickel-cadmium (NiCd) rechargeable batteries were once popular for portable electronic devices, but they suffered from a "memory" effect. If you frequently charged them before they were depleted, they'd lose their ability to take a full charge
- Memory Loss: NiMH batteries don't suffer from this effect and have another advantage over NiCd batteries by storing much more power per ounce
- Chemistry: The positive end of a NiMH battery consists of nickel oxyhydroxide, while the negative end is composed of a hydrogen-absorbing alloy. The conductive material inside the battery is usually potassium hydroxide
- Size matters: NiMH batteries are available in most popular battery sizes, including AAA, AA, C, D and the rectangular 9-volt size
- Future Tech: There are newer battery technologies that offer more power per ounce. Lithium ion and lithium polymer batteries are popular in cell phones because they're smaller and lighter than NiMH batteries
- Recycling: NiMH batteries can be recycled at many electronics and office-supply stores. More information is available from the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corp. website
How to Care for NIMH Rechargeable Batteries:

NIHM batteries are made of nickel metal hydride composites that allow for the battery to be recharged. However, this composite of nickel metal hydride develops a "memory" of its previous power levels. If the same power level is used over and over again, without maintenance, the battery can become used to that power level. To prevent this from occurring, the battery must be fully discharged and recharged occasionally to prevent a burn-in of the "memory" level.- Fully charge your battery in the recharger when you first get the batteries. Do not take the batteries out until the charge light displays green. Insert the NIHM batteries into your devices and use the batteries up completely. If you take it out with some power left over, the battery will start to "forget" that part of the battery. Only once it is fully discharged should you recharge the NIHM batteries with their associated recharger. This has to be done three times to break in the battery
- Keep the battery clean and dry, using a dry cloth to keep the contacts clean. Do not store NIHM batteries in the freezer, as this does nothing for NIHM batteries and the moisture can cause electrical shorts. Do not store the battery in hot places like directly in the sun, as the thermal expansion of the NIHM composite can cause the casing to bulge and render the battery unusable
- Do not drop or expose the batteries to fire. Drops can cause kinetic force to be transferred to the integral nickel metal hydride composite structure and break its fragile matrix. Fire can cause thermal expansion that would distort the battery and possibly explode the battery

03-16-2013- Pros: cheapest
- Cons: useless
- Other Thoughts: Not good for cameras. I guess that they'll work on clocks, remotes and alikes... Best thing in selecting batteries is to feel teir weight. These weight like a feather: no good. They get me 4 or 5 photos in my fujifilm camera. What to expect for that price? 2500 mAh?! Yeah, right.
