How to Use a Camera Extension Adapter Tube:



Camera extension tubes are used for macro-photography. They produce the same effect as closeup lenses but usually produce a higher quality image because they contain no glass elements. An extension tube is a metal tube with a bayonet fitting, allowing it to be attached between the lens and camera body; much like a lens would be attached. Some extension tubes allow auto-focus and other electronic controls, while others do not. Extension tubes of different lengths can be connected to produce a wide range of magnification configurations.

• Calculate the amount of magnification when using extension adapter tubes by using the following formula: Extension tube length (mm)/focal length of the lens attached (mm) = magnification -- i.e., using a 68mm extension tube with a 50mm lens gives 1.36:1 magnification - 68/50 = 1.36.
• Remove the lens from the camera body. Attach an extension tube, or a combination of several, to the camera body in the same manner that you would attach a lens.
• Attach a camera lens to the extension tube or tube combination in the same manner that you would attach the lens to the camera body. The connectors on the tube and camera body are the same.
• Use your camera as normal, but you will notice a marked increase in the magnification that the lens now provides. Experiment with extension tube combinations to produce the desired magnification
