How to Remove an Infrared Filter on a Digital Camera:
- Remove the lens from the camera body. This is done by depressing a small release tab near the lens mounting threads and rotating the lens counterclockwise
- Locate the infrared filter. It will be attached to the front of the lens. Most filters will have the manufacturer's name and other information about the filter printed along its edges
- Grasp the edges of the filter with one hand while supporting the camera lens with the other. Turn the filter counterclockwise until it loosens from the lens. If the filter is stuck, apply a very small drop of lighter fluid to the seam between the filter and lens
- Remove the filter. Wipe clean the edges and thread with a microfiber cloth. Clean the glass with a lens tissue. Store the filter in a clean case or carrying pouch until next use
How to Use an Infrared Filter:
- Attach your camera to the tripod and position it in the desired location. Because most infrared filters are nearly opaque, longer exposure times are required. A tripod will reduce blur and vibration during the exposure
- Focus on your subject or scene. As the filter is very dark, you won't be able to achieve accurate focus once it is attached
- Screw the filter onto the camera's lens. Make sure that the filter size matches the lens' thread size
- Set the camera to Manual ("M") mode, then select a small aperture such as f/11 or f/16. Small apertures provide deep depth of field, or a long range of effective focus, which helps minimize focusing errors and provide a sharp image
- Increase your camera's ISO setting to reduce exposure time. A higher ISO, such as 400 or 800, will make your camera's sensor more sensitive to light. This allows for faster shutter speeds and compensates for the filter's opaqueness
- Switch your camera to black and white mode. Infrared pictures tend to look better in monochrome, but you can switch back to color at any point
- Set your shutter speed to 1/2-second. Take several test shots and review your results. If your image is too dark or underexposed, increase the exposure time. If your image is too light or overexposed, reduce the exposure time
