    How Does a NiMH Battery Work?

    Background:

    • NiMH or Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries are a type of rechargeable battery. They are used for a variety of purposes ranging from digital cameras to hybrid vehicles and industrial applications. The popularity of these batteries has grown in recent years as concerns over the environmental impact of toxic components and interest in recycling have increased. Most NiMH batteries can be recharged several hundred times over the course of its life. They are also subject to very little decline in the overall power output provided after they are charged.

    Batteries:

    • Batteries are self contained units that use chemical reactions to produce electricity. Most batteries have a four-component design. There is a positive electrode, negative electrode, an electrolyte and a separator.
    • In a NiMH battery, the positive electrode is typically composed of nickel hydroxide, hence the name Nickel-Metal Hydride. The negative electrode is typically made of a metal hydride material, but the metals used vary. The electrolyte is a chemical solution, often potassium hydroxide, which allows for ion transfer between the positive and negative electrode. The separator is used to physically separate the positive and negative electrodes, but to allow ion transfers.

    Electricity Production:

    • To produce electricity, the battery must be connected to an external circuit. Placing a battery into a device with the battery aligned to the positive and negative symbols is the standard way of connecting a battery to a circuit. Once the device begins to draw power, electrons move out of the negative electrode, which is accompanied by oxidation of the electrode and the release of hydrogen.
    • The electrons will eventually be deposited in the positive electrode which will absorb hydrogen. Ion exchanges through the electrolyte complete the circuit. For standard batteries, when the negative electrode can no longer oxidize and produce electrons, the battery is dead. For NiMH batteries, the particular metals and chemicals involved allows the process to be reversed.
    • In essence, a charger can pull electrons out of the positive electrode, causing it to oxidize and expel hydrogen. It can then put the electrons back into the negative electrode, causing it to absorb hydrogen. This allows the battery to be used over and over again

My original battery died after 1 year and 1 week. This replacement battery works great so far at about half the price and I don't notice any difference to the original battery. I don't expect the life time to be much less than the original either. So this is a great value!

So far so good. Bought this battery pack about a month ago and the roomba is going strong. I have no complaints. This battery pack works as well as the original did. Only thing I can't tell is how long it will last. It cost almost half the price of a oem battery pack.

This battery is very good. Run it the first 4 times until it completely dies, then put it back on the charger, this will improve its life. Also do this periodically.

It never stops cleaning!

I bought my replacement from here. I know this product has bad reviews but that's because some of the sellers are no good. Buy this and you'll get the OEM battery replacement. It works more than great. My Roomba runs longer than it ever did before even though it's the same battery. The robot cleaned at least 6 rooms before finally calling it a day. Now if only my roomba could run quieter.

take the battery pack out and use either sandpaper or knife to clean the battery contact points <br/>try this out before you purchase the new battery - this is the lesson I learned

  • Can NiMH batteries be substituted for alkaline batteries even though they are only 1.2 volts?
  • Yes, for most high drain electronic applications NiMH batteries are ideal substitutes and you needn't worry about the apparent voltage differences.  Even though alkaline batteries are rated at a nominal 1.5 volts, they only deliver 1.5 volts when they are fully charged.  As they begin to discharge the voltage of alkaline batteries continuously drops.  In fact, over the course of their discharge, alkaline batteries actually average about 1.2 volts.  That's very close to the 1.2 volts of a NiMH battery. The main difference is that an alkaline battery starts at 1.5 volts and gradually drops to less than 1.0 volts.  NiMH batteries stay at about 1.2 volts for most of their discharge cycle.

  • Which are better, NiCd batteries or NiMH batteries?
  • For most electronic devices it is better to use NiMH batteries than NiCd batteries.  NiCd batteries use Cadmium, a highly toxic heavy metal, that can damage the environment if not disposed of properly. (They should be recycled not discarded).  NiMH batteries usually have a higher capacity than NiCd batteries of the same size.  Some people argue that NiCd batteries deliver faster discharge rates than NiMH batteries.  While this may be true under certain circumstances, the difference is not relevant when considering power sources for electronic devices like digital cameras or portable music players. (If you are choosing a battery to drive a high torque power screwdriver, then NiCds can outperform NiMH).  NiMH batteries require more sophisticated chargers than those typically used for NiCd batteries.  But smart chargers designed especially for NiMH batteries are now readily available.

  • Do NiMH batteries have memory effect?
  • Technically, NiMH batteries do not have a "memory effect", but strictly speaking neither do NiCds.  However NiMH batteries can experience voltage depletion, also called voltage depression, similar to that of NiCd batteries, but the effect is normally  less noticeable.  To completely eliminate the possibility of NiMH batteries suffering any voltage depletion effect  manufacturers recommend an OCCASIONAL, complete discharge of NiMH batteries followed by a full recharge. NiMH batteries can also be damaged by overcharge and improper storage (see the NiCd section immediately above this one). Most users of NiMH batteries don't have to be concerned with this voltage depletion effect.  But if you use a device say a flashlight, radio, or digital camera for only a short time every day and then charge the batteries every night, you will need to let the NiMH (or NiCd) batteries run down occasionally.
