About Expiration Dates on Ink Cartridges for Printers:

Ink jet cartridges use wet ink that dries out after being stored for a long time. When using expired cartridges the ink may be wet in some places but dry in others, leading to printing problems. Despite this, many expired cartridges still work well, and you can find inexpensive expired cartridges at online resellers that might help you save lots of money on ink cartridges
Significance- The expiration date on an ink cartridge is an estimate, not an ironclad indicator of whether or not it will stop working. Sometimes it's possible to find excellent deals on expired ink cartridges in bulk on sites like eBay and Craigslist that will allow you to keep your printer fueled for much less. If you don't mind throwing out a few cartridges that don't work now and then and enduring the occasional botched page, it's not a bad bet to make. New cartridges can be very expensive, after all
Function
- Many cartridges continue to work just fine long after their expiration dates, but many manufacturers have taken to putting timers in their cartridges to make them impossible for customers to use. The rationale given by these companies has been that they would often receive customer service complaints about expired cartridges that would produce ink inconsistently. This would lead people to believe that their printers were functioning improperly, even though it was just the cartridges that were the problem. It also helps to preserve the internal workings of the printer itself
How to Clean Printer Ink Cartridge:

Thirty bucks for one cartridge? It's crazy, so make sure you get the most out of each ink cartridge. If you have a cartridge that's clogged, use these tips to get it back in proper working order
Instructions- First, identify what type of cartridge you have. Some cartridges have a print head on the cartridge itself, while in others; it is located in the holster that holds the cartridges. Most HPs have the print head on the cartridge, but other brands may vary. Check your owner's manual or consult the website for details. This information will tell you what part of the ink system you need to clean. It will always be the print head that you want to clean, so its location is key
- Before trying anything else, run a cleaning cycle on your printer. Almost every printer has one, and it will resolve simple issues. If this does not solve the problem, proceed to Step 3
- Next, remove the cartridge from its holder. If you have a cartridge with the print head on it, run under hot water for 20 seconds
- Dry the cartridge with a soft cloth. Wait until completely dry and reinstall
- If that doesn't work, remove the cartridge again. Dampen a cotton swab with glass cleaner and swab the print head. Dry again with a soft cloth. Reinstall
- If your print head is inside the machine, you can repeat the same process as in Step 4. Just make sure to let the print head air dry, or dry it with a cotton swab before using
- The best way of cleaning an ink cartridge is to make sure it doesn't have to be done in the first place. You can do so simply by running a few test pages on your printer once a week to keep the ink flowing

12-29-2010- Other Thoughts: These are the correct colors and have enough ink in here for the average fellow to fill his ink for the rest of his live. Since all of these printer people price their ink close to gold, its a great value, and filling the cartridges is very simple
