Different manufacturers use different frequency codes so you will need a Universal Remote that shares the PS3 frequencies. The remotes you have now will most likely not do, unless one of your pieces of hardware is also a Sony and has multi-function capabilities.
1. Using the Playstation controllers to control a DVD remote can be an awkward process at the best of times. Fortunately, Sony and other companies have realized this and made remote control available for players that also want to use the Playstation 3 as a full-featured DVD player and view Blu Ray movies. The PS3 remote works like other controllers by sending out signals that are picked up by the device and interpreted by an internal processor, but the system remote controls understands only Bluetooth commands. An enterprising programmer may someday write an application that lets a PS3 owner use a Bluetooth enabled cell phone to play Blu Ray DVDs on Sony's latest console.
2. Bluetooth remotes and devices that translate Infrared commands to Bluetooth commands are available for this console. The advantage of the former is that they are not usually high in price, and the latter allow for greater backwards compatibility.
