For a while CMOS was considered a lower quality option than CCD, but not any more. Nowadays, they are equivalent. However, since most manufacturers went with CCD in the early years of digital cameras, there are more cameras on the market which use that type of sensor. CMOS has some advantages like using less power (so batteries will last longer) and being less expensive to manufacture, so we'll probably see more CMOS cameras in the future.
With MTS files, you are using a hard disc drive (HG series) or flash memory (HF series) Canon camcorder. To edit MTS files directly, your Mac must be running an Intel chip and iMovie must be '08 or newer and FinalCut must be the current version. If all these criteria are met, let's start with iMovie first. Then launch iMovie and be sure the "Video type" is set (at the beginning - when you start a new project, you name the file, select the destination, set the video type and click create). Drag the MTS files to the Log & Capture area. It will take a bit of time to decompress the highly compressed video files. Then launch FinalCut. In the Preferences, be sure that all the input selections are set to bring in AVCHD and h.264/AVC. Drag the MTS files to the Log & Capture area. It will take a bit of time to decompress the highly compressed video files. Either should be able to do the job - FinalCut has more editing capabilities.
The difference is in the sensors of the digital cameras. CMOS tends to be used more by Canon DSLRs, where as Nikon, Pentax, and just about every other manufacturer uses CCD.
