  • I bought this scope for my neighbor's kids as a Christmas present. They (along with their dad) had very little experience with telescopes, so I expected it would take some time (along with a little help from me) to get this scope up and running. I was wrong. The very night I gave it to them, they (actually, the dad) set it up and enjoyed looking at the things with it. They didn't need me at all. In fact, I have yet to look through the scope myself. They tell me it's fantastic. It certainly struck me as a serious, well-made scope when we took it out of the box. The fact that it is so easy to use makes it a really great scope.

  • Product FAQs
  • Is it good to buy a spotting scope or monocular instead of telescope?
  • It depends on what you want to look at with it. Spotting scopes are primarily for terrestrial observation. They are not well suited for astronomical observation, primarily because they only allow straight-through viewing, which forces your head and neck into awkward positions when looking at objects high in the sky. They also introduce additional prisms and/or lenses which reduce the amount of light they gather and introduce optical aberrations. An 80mm objective and 65x magnification will not give you enough resolution for more than the most casual looks at the Moon and planets, where apertures of 150mm and magnifications of 200x are the real starting points.

  • Can you view stars close-up with a mini-telescope/monocular?
  • Most of the stars that are "listed" by these folks cannot be easily found, either because they are so dim and obscure or because they are part of a cluster that includes millions of other stars. If this star can be found at all, your best chance of seeing it is with a pair of binoculars.

  • Can you use night vision equipment on a telescope?
  • You can do it, but with a telescope it doesn't buy you as much.
The purpose of an image intensifier is to make dim thing brighter. That's also the primary purpose of the telescope's objective lens (or mirror). But the image intensifier has a big drawback: the image is lower resolution than you can get with your eye. Pinpoints of light widen out into blobs with the intensifier. In the telescope, pinpoints remain pinpoints, so you can see much more detail in the telescope alone than you can with the intensifier.
For that reason, not many people use an image intensifier with a telescope. But there are a few applications where fine detail is not needed and greater brightness is important, like searching for supernovae in distant galaxies. Some amateurs in those pursuits have used intensifiers to good effect.
