How to Make an RS232 Male to Female Cable:

RS232 cables typically consist of two DB9 female connectors on each side of the data cable. However, there are devices configured with a female DB9 connector that require a male connector at the cable end in order to establish a connection. Building a DB9 female to DB9 male RS232 "gender changer" requires a few parts and can be completed in 10 minutes.

Things You'll Need:

• DB9 male connector
• DB9 female connector
• 6 inches of 9 conductor, 24 AWG data cable
• Soldering iron with solder
• Wire stripping tool
• DB9 connector covers
• Philips screwdriver

Step:

• Strip 2 inches of the outside plastic cover from each end of the data cable
• Strip 1 centimeter of the plastic cover from each end of each wire conductor that is inside the data cable
• Solder one data cable wire to each pin on the back of the male connector
• Solder one data cable wire to each pin on the back of the female connector according to the pinout below:

        Pin 1 to Pin 1

        Pin 2 to Pin 2

        Pin 3 to Pin 3

        Pin 4 to Pin 4

        Pin 5 to Pin 5

        Pin 6 to Pin 6

        Pin 7 to Pin 7

        Pin 8 to Pin 8

• Loosen the screws on each of the DB9 connector covers and then open the covers. Place the covers onto each of the DB9 connectors and snap the covers in place. Tighten the screws
