How to Choose an RC Airplane Motor?

• As electric powered motors continue to gain in popularity with RC airplane enthusiasts, choosing the right motor for your airplane becomes more difficult. With popularity comes variety, and finding the motor that best suits your airplane's size and your flying preferences require that you know the differences in motors and how those differences directly affect the performance of your airplane. Choosing badly can lead to frustrating control issues--often leading to spectacular crashes--while choosing correctly can give you years of flying enjoyment
• Weigh your airplane. Limit your motor choices to those capable of keeping an airplane of your weight aloft and at speed while operating close to the limits of its revolutions per minute. A motor with too little power will burn itself out, while one with too much power will add unnecessary weight to your airplane and make it difficult to maneuver
• Pick a direct drive motor that connects your motor directly to the propeller, or a motor that operates by connecting to a gearbox and then the propeller, in order to reduce the RPMS from the motor. Use a direct drive connection, good for an acrobatic plane or combat flyer, if you're looking for very high propeller speeds. For slower planes that tend to cruise, go with a gearbox connection

How to Measure the Voltage of a Brushless Motor?  

Brushless motors use electricity to rotate a shaft to perform various tasks like operating radio-controlled cars and running vacuum cleaners. The motor contains an electromagnet that keeps the shaft rotating once electricity is applied. Electrical devices, such as brushless motors, are produced to operate at a particular voltage. Voltage is a measure of the energy available to the system divided by the electrical charge sent to the device. A difference in voltage between two locations in a wired device causes electrical current to flow

Instructions:

• Turn on the digital multimeter. Read the label of the motor or its documentation to determine whether it uses DC or AC electrical current
• Switch the dial on the multimeter to the DC or AC voltage setting, whichever is appropriate. Voltage is denoted by a capital "V" with either straight lines (DC) or wavy lines (AC) above it
• Touch the black probe of the multimeter to the red (positive) terminal of the motor. Touch the red probe of the multimeter to the black (negative) terminal of the motor. The reading that is displayed on the multimeter screen is the voltage in volts
