How to Use eSATA Drives Via a PCI Express Card:

Newer, faster technology like eSATA can significantly speed up the process of transferring or backing up data. These technologies are incorporated into motherboard designs as they're created. If you wish to upgrade your computer with eSATA but don't want to go through the hassle and expense of purchasing and installing a new motherboard, simply use a modular, installable expansion card.

• Shut down the computer.
• Disconnect all cables and wires from the computer.
• Open the computer's case according to the manufacturer's instructions (which differ by model).
• Locate a PCI Express slot. The fastest, most common type of PCI Express slot, called x16, is quite long; it's typically the longest slot on the motherboard. There is a tab of plastic in the slot near the end of the slot closest to the front of the computer.
• Insert the PCI Express eSATA card into the PCI Express slot firmly but gently. There should be a slight click when it's properly seated.
• Insert the screw that came with the card into the metal bracket at the rear of the card. There is a matching hole in the case. Make sure the screw is lined up with the hole. Turn it as far as it can go using the screwdriver.
• Note the location of the eSATA card in the back of the computer's case.
• Close the computer's case.
• Reconnect all cables and wires.
• Turn on the computer. Windows detects the card and either installs the drivers automatically or asks you to provide the drivers. If asked for the drivers, insert the disk that came with the card into the computer and follow the on-screen instructions to install the drivers.
• Locate the eSATA card you just installed on the back of the computer. Connect the eSATA drives to the eSATA ports on the card.
• Plug the power cords of the eSATA drives into an electrical outlet or power strip.
• Flip the power switches on the eSATA drives. Windows will detect the drives automatically.
