Place your Nintendo DS Lite on a flat surface near a power outlet.
Find the AC connector port on the DS Lite. This port is located on the back edge of the machine next to the slot that accepts game cards.
Plug the smaller end of the AC adapter into the AC adapter port on the Nintendo DS Lite. The smaller end looks a bit like a USB connector.
Plug the other end of the adapter cord into a functioning wall outlet. On the top of the DS Lite, along the right back edge, you will see two LED indicator lights. One light will glow orange when the unit is charging.
If you want, open the Nintendo DS Lite and turn on the power. Start gaming or using the PictoChat feature. The battery will charge while you are using the DS Lite, although at a slower rate.
When the battery is charged, unplug the AC adapter from the outlet. Now unplug the adapter from the Nintendo DS Lite. Store the adapter cord.
To understand how an AC adapter works, first understand the two main electrical currents people use. Alternating Current (AC) is an electrical current generated from a main source that flows two ways; it flows back and forth along an electrical line or wire. Direct Current (DC) flows only one way at a time and the energy typically loses strength after it moves. To safely contain or direct energy to use in a household appliance, for example, people need to have the AC turned into DC.
Naturally occurring forces in the universe can cause particles to move. One of these forces is "electromagnetism." This phenomenon is the reason why charged particles can also make electric current, such as lightning, but people cannot use lightning as it is too unpredictable. To make man-made electricity, one need only have a power supply to redirect nature's electromagnetic field to generate either alternating or direct current. Some experts regard electricity as "temperamental," so you need a device to maintain this energy interflow safely.
To make an electrical gadget work, you have to direct electricity into it, and keep it there until you do not want to use it anymore. Power stations generally send alternating current through power lines. It is the easiest way to send energy to a home, apartment or office building. Most devices utilize direct current. A transformer is typically responsible for changing the voltage that runs from an outlet. A common AC adapter is also a type of transformer, but it does not change the amount of electricity, just the direction in which it flows back and forth through a wire or adjoining devices.
There are many brands of power inverters with many options. The main options to consider are the input and output power limits. Our example uses a NEXXTECH 400-Watt power inverter with an 800-watt surge limit and two 3-prong AC outlets. It also comes with two cables--one with a cable with alligator clips and another with a vehicle cigarette lighter adaptor. It can be purchased for under $60 at most electronics stores, such as Circuit City.
You can use a single 12-Volt battery or one found in a vehicle.
Set up the inverter. You need to decide if it will be connected to the battery directly or through a vehicle cigarette lighter. If direct, connect it to the cable with the alligator clips. If to a cigarette lighter, connect it to the cable with the cigarette lighter adaptor. Take the cable's two ring connectors, connect them to the inverter's two terminals and tighten the nuts until snug. The red cable goes on the red positive DC terminal, and the black cable goes on the negative DC terminal.
Connect the battery to the inverter. If connecting the battery directly to the inverter, use the cable with the alligator clips. Securely clip the negative--black--clip to the negative battery terminal and the positive--red--clip to the positive battery terminal. If connecting the battery to the inverter with a cigarette lighter, use the cable with the cigarette lighter adapter. Insert the plug into the cigarette lighter.
Turn the power inverter on. Flip the switch to on and the power light should be lit.
Plug your electric device(s) into the power inverter's two 3-prong AC outlets. Be sure the devices have a combined input requirement of below the inverter's maximum output level.
