How to Use Light Diffusers in Photography:

    • Diffusing light while taking a picture helps reduce the amount of glare on your subject and also decreases the overall amount of light present. You can create your own diffuser using household items or you can purchase a diffuser that goes over your strobe lights. You also buy a plastic cover that fits over your flash. Whichever method you use, being able to diffuse light and control it will give you a more professional look to your photographs

    Instructions:

    • Create a temporary light diffuser by cutting out the center of a piece of rectangular shaped foamcore. You can purchase sheets at local crafting stores or online. Creating a frame is your goal. Place a thin sheet of tissue paper over the hole. Place the diffuser over your strobe lights or in a window to block the sunlight. This is a temporary solution because the tissue paper can tear easily
    • Purchase a light diffuser kit. These kits include a basic solid colored light diffuser and shiny metallic reflectors when you want to bounce light off your subject. You can transport your light diffuser kit because it folds up easily. Place the diffuser over strobe lights to create the proper amount of light for your photograph
    • Purchase an omni cover for your flash. This cover is made from durable plastic that fits snugly over your flash. You will be able to better control the amount of light your flash emits. This is good for locations that do not have natural light or when you don't have additional lighting available
    • Place a thin piece of tissue paper over your flash and secure it with rubber bands to create a diffuser. While this too is a temporary solution, you should be able to get the right amount of light needed
    • Use light diffusers when you want to create a subtle glow around your subject or when you're trying to reduce the amount of light from your strobes or the sun. Too much light can create unnecessary shadows or drown out your subject in the photo

How to Use Reflectors and Diffusers in Photography:

    • Determine the amount of light directed to the subject. Consider studio flashes when shooting indoors
    • Use a reflector indoors to direct additional light to the underside of the subject's face to fill darker areas that are in shadow. Direct the reflector typically at a 45-degree angle to the light source and towards the subject. Hold the reflector in such a manner that best fills in the shadows with light
    • Direct the light source through a diffuser to better distribute the light onto the subject. A diffuser is a piece of material usually rip-stop nylon that light can easily pass through
    • Be certain the reflector has a shiny, uneven pattern to catch light and reflect it back. Smooth reflectors direct too much light onto the subject. Black reflectors reflect small amounts of light to the subject
    • Create a soft-box diffuser by covering the open end of a cardboard box with rip-stop nylon and cutting an opening in the rear of the box for the flash to pass through. Slide the cut end over the flash device and allow the light to pass through the material to evenly light the subject

    Types of Flash Diffusers:

    • Bounces - A common form of flash technique is to bounce the light from another surface. Some on-camera hot shoe flashes can be angled to reflect from a ceiling or nearby wall. The effect of the light bouncing from a light, preferably white, surface is a diffusion of the light from the flash. If your flash doesn't angle, you can sometimes attach a white card or piece of paper to the flash to make a temporary bounce. In studio photography, a common bounce diffuser is a studio umbrella. Studio umbrellas have irregular surfaces that reflect the light in more random directions, thus creates a diffusion of the light. Umbrellas can also be covered with diffusion cloth for more diffuse light
    • Shoot Through - Shoot through diffusion is any material where the flash is fired directly through the material. There are many different shoot through diffusers for on-camera flashes. Some are built in plastic plates that flip down over the front of the flash. Some flashes support the use of thin plastic inserts to diffuse the light. A number of third-party flash diffusers work using techniques similar to studio soft-boxes. These are fit over the front of an on-camera flash to create a larger, lower powered diffuse light source. There are many forms of studio shoot through diffusers. One common diffuser is a soft box. Soft boxes range in size from a foot or two square to six feet long and wide. Some soft boxes are round or hexagonal. In some cases, shoot through studio diffusers have multiple layers of diffusion material. If you need a diffuse light, but don't have a diffuser available, you can make one by hanging translucent cloth in front of your studio flash
    • Diffusion Control - Because diffusion increases the light spread, it can sometimes cause light to fall on unwanted areas. If you are using a small diffuser on the front of a studio strobe, you can add a snoot, barn doors, or other method of shading areas of where you don't want light. Large diffusers, like soft boxes, can be more difficult to control. For large diffusers, you may have to resort to large panels to keep light off unwanted areas
