How to Construct an LED Flashlight with Brightness Control

The "Stinger" flashlight by the Streamlight brand has a brighter bulb than a conventional flashlight but is just as susceptible to a contact in the tail cap push button switch getting loose. This renders the flashlight unusable. To repair the switch, disassemble the tail cap and reseat the contact. A few tools common to most households will be needed, as will a special tool designed for use with tail caps

• Unscrew the tail cap from the back of the Stinger flashlight. Place the tail cap on a table with the open end facing up. Unscrew the ring from the top of the tail cap and place it aside. Insert the switch repair tool into the screw hole inside the cap. Twist the tool counterclockwise
• Push down on the tool to raise the insulator plate. Grip an edge of the insulator plate with the jaws of a set of needle-nose pliers. Pull the insulator plate out of the tail cap
• Grip the loose side contact pin that is inside the tail cap with the pliers. Pull the pin out. Reinsert the pin into the side of the insulator plate. Return the insulator plate into the tail cap. Insert the tool into the screw hole in the tail cap. Twist the tool clockwise. Screw the ring back onto the top of the tail cap

How to Make Homemade Flashlights

The flashlight, or torch, is a portable, battery-powered light. It was invented in the late 19th century. The flashlight was a joint invention created by Conrad Hubert and David Misell, who was an employee of Hubert. The company, American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing, developed the first few flashlights out of paper tubes with light bulbs and glass reflectors. While today's flashlights are encased in plastic, the basic invention is still the same and is replicable at home

Things You'll Need:

• 2 D-cell batteries
• 10 inches #22 insulated copper bell wire
• Cardboard tube
• 2 brass fasteners
• Cardboard
• #222, 3-volt miniature bulb
• Paper clip
• Tape
• Scissors
• Small paper cup

Instructions

• Punch brass fasteners on one side of the paper tube. Attach the paper clip to one end of the brass tip. Fasteners should be close enough so that the paper clip can touch both fasteners. The paper clip will act as a switch to turn light on or off. The "On" switch is engaged when the paper clip touches opposite fastener, and the "Off" switch is engaged when the paper clip does not touch the fastener.
• Cut the wire in half, and strip the plastic coating of the ends. Strip about one inch on either side of the wire. Do not cut into the wire when stripping the plastic.
• Fasten each wire piece inside the paper tube to the brass fasteners. Wind exposed wire around the fastener for secured contact. The remaining wire should stick out at either end of the tube.
• With tape, fasten the D-cell batteries to each other. Place the "plus" side of one battery next to the "minus" side of the other. Place the taped batteries into the tube.
• Tape a wire piece to the end of the negative side of the battery.
• Cut a strip 1 inch wide by 3 inches long of cardboard. Cut a hole in the center of the cardboard large enough for the base of the light bulb to enter. Place the light bulb through the hole of the cardboard and attach the remaining exposed wire to the bulb. Wind the wire around the base of the bulb securely.
• With two strips of tape, securely fasten the cardboard and light bulb strip to the end of the cardboard tube and battery.
• Cut a small hole in the bottom of a paper cup to fit light bulb through. This will act as a reflector. Move the paper clip to turn the flashlight on and off.
