XP won't install USB optical mouse
    Posted: 12/21/2009 03:36 EST
2 days ago my XP SP3 notebook decided it didn't like USB mice. I've tried several standard USB optical mice (2 button + wheel) to no avail. These mice work fine on other notebooks/desktops.

When I plug a mouse in, it detects the new hardware, and sees it as "USB PS/2 Optical Mouse." XP searches and can't find any compatible drivers. It used to work fine with the standard "HID compliant" mouse driver. Now, nothing.

I've tried all the drivers I can find, I've even re installed the original drivers.cab file from the XP Pro install cd....nothing.

    Any suggestions? Thanks!!

    Here is something to try:
Right click on My Computer, select properties. Hardware, Device Manager.
When that opens, is there anything with a yellow triangle and a ! or ? in it?
If there is, (*)right click on it, select properties, remove. Immediately reboot the computer and let Windows find it and reinstall it.(*)
If there is no triangle, still do the rest of the instructions between the (*) with the mouse listing.(*)
Let us know how this goes.
    Good Luck
