    PSP or DS?
    Posted: 12/07/2009 02:16 EST
    Anyone have experience with both handheld game consoles? My sons, ages 6 and 8, have been asking for these and Santa might bring them this year...but I can't decide which to ask for.

    I've used DS and liked it, but haven't played any kids games. (Interestingly, I see as many adults with them as I see kids.) I'm under the impression that PSP is better because you can play games with friends wirelessly (I guess like w bluetooth?) and they can plug into TVs if the child wants to use a big screen.

    The DS is more fun to play with because of the touch screen. But the PSP has better graphics. It depends on what you're looking for

    I think DS, it has better selection of games from fun games to games that help you.

    The DS, here's why
    ->It's cheaper than the PSP

    ->It is much more kid-friendly as the folding screen prevents most falls and step-ons from damaging the screens. The PSP will suffer a good degree of cosmetic and ultimately hardware malfunctions if mishandled excessively.

    ->A HUGE selection of children oriented titles like Mario, the new Kirby Super Star that just came out, Brain Age(They will love to try and make themselves more smart than their current age). The PSP's library is very concentrated with games that value presentation with appreciation -- they mostly look really good with nothing beyond conventional gaming mechanics.

    Overall:I personally like the PSP for the increased emphasis on the graphics, but the games that need to come out are lacking, while the DS has many releases to catch your children's attention. A very important detail is that the DS game console is cheaper and more durable, but the game cartridges are very small(a little bigger than a 1" square) and can be lost w/o proper stowage. I highly recommend the DS over the PSP for young children who may not be savvy with a more expensive, more sensitive piece of equipment that is the PSP. The upgraded models are not a concern regarding gameplay except that for the DS, the upgrade will not have the gameboy advance game slot, another detail which will not allow them to play older gameboy games.

    I have both ^^;
    Well, for starters you need to think about what they would like more, button mashing action, rpg, puzzle, ect.
    There are a lot more mature games out there for the PSP, as well as a lot more "action/adventure."
    There are tons of fun and puzzle games for the DS.
    Personally I like the PSP because of memory stick capabilities, but for most people that translates to just Movies, Music, and Photos.
    The DS is definitely more of a game console, while the PSP makes a nice Mp3 player if you buy a 1~4GB memory stick (2GB/4GB ipods=same sizE! D:)
    I like the innovative stylus for the DS, it makes it different and fun, just don't lose it or you'll be forced to use your finger.

    As for wireless connectivity, BOTH have it.
    PSP-2000 has the video plug in, but you have to buy the COMPONENT, NOT COMPOSITE cables to use it with games.
    Personally, I think the closer you hold the screen to your face, the bigger it is ^^;

    Really, for 6~8 year olds, I would suggest the DS and fun games.
    If you think your kids are more action/adventure people, then the PSP.

    Eitherway I don't think they'll be unhappy that you're buying them something so cool! :D
    OR, You could get two mini-magazines, one on the DS and the other on the PSP and see which one they pick up. >_>;;

    Wow, that's a tough question. For kids, I'd definitely go for the DS. It's got a larger library of kid-friendly games, but not that many "hardcore" ones. Be warned though, sometime within the year Nintendo is releasing the DSi, which is an upgraded model that includes full internet access, internal storage memory and two cameras. If you decide on the DS, it'd be better to wait for that version (they both use the same cartridges, so it's not an entirely new console).

    The PSP is a very advanced piece of technology for a handheld. The graphics are phenomenal (for a handheld), almost like a portable PS2. You can connect to the PlayStation Network and download games and other extras as well as play online multiplayer. The game selection is a little more limited than the DS, but you should have no problem finding games for all ages. Definitely more of a "hardcore" system. Again though, Sony will be releasing (or maybe it's already out), an upgraded version called PSP-3000 that has a higher-resolution screen and built-in microphone. Other than those two upgrades, though, the current PSP-2000 is identical to the 3000 functionally.

    Hope this helps!
