There was a segment on an ABC News cable channel where it was mentioned that once a month, you should allow any devices (PDAs, MP3 players, phones, laptops, etc.) with rechargeable batteries to completely run down until they shut off, and then recharge them fully. This prolongs the life of the battery.

Most of the batteries nowadays are lithium, so you don't have to worry about that.

Also not true for Nickel Metal Hydrate (NiMH) batteries.

That's only true for NiCads. Not true at all for Lithium Ions.

LI-Ion's aren't like that. Thay only discharge to a certain point, and then shut down. It's a safety feature for the battery.

Unless the battery or charger is already somehow marginal and it won't recharge from dead.
    Then you'll wish you hadn't.
I had a 2-way radio that I had to jump start the battery when I let it run down too far. Still used the battery for a couple of years after this started. I guess most people would have thown the battery out after the first time of no response of dropping in the charger.
