What's the Camera Lens Filters:

    • Camera lens filters still have many uses in digital photography, and should be an important part of any photographer's camera bag. These can include polarizing filters to reduce glare and improve saturation, or simple UV/haze filters to provide extra protection for the front of your lens

    Lens Filter Type:

    • The most commonly used filters for digital photography include polarizing (linear/circular), UV/haze, neutral density, graduated neutral density and warming/cooling or color filters
    • Example uses for each are listed below:

    Filter Type

    Primary Use

    Common Subject Matter

    Linear & Circular Polarizers

    Reduce Glare Improve Saturation

Sky / Water / Foliage in Landscape Photography

    Neutral Density (ND)

    Extend Exposure Time

    Waterfalls, Rivers
    under bright light

    Graduated Neutral Density (GND)

Control Strong Light Gradients Reduce Vignetting

    Dramatically Lit Landscapes

    UV / Haze

Improve Clarity with Film Provide Lens Protection

    Warming / Cooling

    Problems with Lens Filters:

    • Filters should only be used when necessary because they can also adversely affect the image. Since they effectively introduce an additional piece of glass between your camera's sensor and the subject, they have the potential to reduce image quality. This usually comes in the form of either a slight color tint, a reduction in local or overall image contrast, or ghosting and increased lens flare caused by light inadvertently reflecting off the inside of the filter
    • Filters may also introduce physical vignetting (light fall-off or blackening at the edges of the image) if their opaque edge gets in the way of light entering the lens (right example). This was created by stacking a polarizing filter on top of a UV filter while also using a wide angle lens-causing the edges of the outermost filter to get in the way of the image. Stacking filters therefore has the potential to make all of the above problems much worse

Note on Choosing a Filter Size for a Camera Lens:

    • Lens filters generally come in two varieties: screw-on and front filters. Front filters are more flexible because they can be used on virtually any lens diameter, however these may also be more cumbersome to use since they may need to be held in front of the lens. On the other hand, filter holder kits are available that can improve this process. Screw-on filters can provide an air-tight seal when needed for protection, and cannot accidentally move relative to the lens during composure. The main disadvantage is that a given screw-on filter will only work with a specific lens size
    • The size of a screw-on filter is expressed in terms of its diameter, which corresponds to the diameter usually listed on the top or front of your camera lens. This diameter is listed in millimeters and usually ranges from about 46 to 82 mm for digital SLR cameras. Step-up or step-down adapters can enable a given filter size to be used on a lens with a smaller or larger diameter, respectively. However, step-down filter adapters may introduce substantial vignetting (since the filter may block light at the edges of the lens), whereas step-up adapters mean that your filter is much larger (and potentially more cumbersome) than is required
    • The height of the filter edges may also be important. Ultra-thin and other special filters are designed so that they can be used on wide angle lenses without vignetting. On the other hand, these may also be much more expensive and often do not have threads on the outside to accept another filter (or sometimes even the lens cap)

Not bad overall

cheap. does not affect image quality too much.

plastic-ly feel.

great alternative to other expensive graduated filters. although it only offer about 2 to 3 stops of light transmission. but good for beginner or someone trying out gd filters for shooting landscape or sunset.

Must have filter
00:00:00 05-01-2011
There were no problems with this second filter. This is my first filter so don't have a lot to compare it to, but the images so far are very nice allowing me to slow shutter speed down in a bright scene. The construction of the filter is superb and what you would expect for one in this price range.

Nice item

Very clean piece of glass. I'm not to impressed with the color of the filter, would like it to be just basic black, but it'll do. I only use filters when I need to, not as extra piece of glass for safety. That's why I bought the ultra clear.

Good value for average performance
00:00:00 04-19-2011
With these filters you pretty much get what you pay for. They have good solid construction, and offer great protection for the lens. Threaded in front and hold caps pretty well too, which is a plus. But, once you start becoming more demanding of quality and move into more "serious" direction, the shortcomings would become more and more evident and very hard to compromise on. My main issue with these is glare they produce in extreme lighting conditions (night photography or very bright light). Some vignetting (although not terrible) is also introduced. For these reasons I never stack them either.

Vignetting
00:00:00 04-16-2011
While this filter kit does a fine job with doing the filtration these 3 filters were designed for, you can be guaranteed that when you use them on wide angle and ultra-wide angle lenses you will get vignetting.

Works fine for a starter ND Graduated filter
00:00:00 04-12-2011
This was my first ND graduated filter. It works nicely. My two complaints are the it's plexi-glass, which will scratch over time and that the edges aren't rounded off. I, like most people, will be hand holding this when using it. These are made to be used with a holder but... Cokin knows people hand hold these most of the time so why not round the edges off a bit. Overall I am happy with it though.

lens flare
00:00:00 04-09-2011
This filter - probably all filters of this type - introduced a flare that I hadn't anticipated. It can probably be digitally edited more easily than unbalanced exposure, but I was disappointed to see it nonetheless.

Otherwise, the graduated filter did what I'd hoped. The transition is not visible in my photographs, and the adjustability of the system in general is ideal.

Essential for outdoor photography
00:00:00 04-05-2011
If you are an outdoor photographer, this filter is a must for your collection. The gradual grey allows you to get the correct exposure for the sky and land. For example, if you are shooting a sunset (or sunrise) it is easy to correctly expose the sky, living the bottom part of your picture underexposed and almost black. This filter will help in these situations by giving both parts of your picture the proper exposure.
The filter itself comes in a protective, plastic case that is well secured. You could throw it in your camera bag and not worry about it accidentally opening.

FYI - this filter is part of the Cokin P series, which are a bit bigger than their A series and designed for wider angle lenses. If you aren't sure what size lens you are going to be using the filter with it is probably a good idea to be safe and go with the P series. In any case, there is plenty of information on Cokin filters to be found around the web. One summary can be found at ...
