How to Choose and Use An iPod Cassette Adapter?
- If you have a cassette deck in your car, and an iPod, purchase a cassette adapter. This cassette shaped device will allow you to listen to your iPod though your car's tape deck.
Instructions:
- Shop for a cassette tape adapter at a local electronics store, big box electronics store, the electronics section of a supermarket, or online. The varying quality of the cassette tape adapters purchased at any of these locations isn't much of an issue.
- Purchase a mid-range cassette tape adapter. Don't buy the cheapest one available, as it will likely break quickly. There's no need to buy the highest quality adapter unless you want as high fidelity a sound as you can achieve. A $20 - $25 adapter is a good compromise.
- Put the cassette tape adapter into the cassette deck of your car.
- Plug the mini jack at the end of the cassette adapter cord into the headphone jack on the top of your iPod.
- Control the volume with both your iPod and the car stereo.
- The iPod volume should be over half-way up in order for the audio to come through the stereo properly.
Tips & Warnings:
- Don't drive while changing songs on your iPod. It's extremely dangerous. Make a playlist before you start driving.

- What happens when a cassette adaptor reaches the end of the reel?
There is no tape inside the adapter, just a magnetic device that lines up with the player's head. Usually there is a system of gears inside the adapter that trick the player into thinking it's a regular tape, but it never "ends."
- How do i connect an ipod to a cassette/cd boombox without using a cassette adaptor?
You can always use an FM transmitter. It broadcasts to a radio station and as long as its close enough to the radio, it works and sound pretty good. If it has an AUX port, you could use that. 1/8" audio jack from the headphones port on the iPod to the boombox (either 1/8", RCA, or 1/4"). If you don't have a AUX port, you're beat, unless you transmit the audio signal via FM, but this results in quality loss.
- Is there a way to upload music from a cassette tape to an iPod?
Yes, there are numerous devices out there that a computer can recieve composite audio. If the computer comes with composite audio input ports, then you can get a cassette player with audio-out ports and connect the cassette player to your computer directly. If your computer doesn't have these audio inputs, then you can buy a USB adapter. You'll also need software to enable this hardware to capture the audio. You should definately go to radioshack and they can tell you what to do.
