I have not heard that one. If this is true, there is going to be lots of people getting hand cancer. Honestly though I think that the answer would be no

I'd suggest switching to a USB mouse.also, make sure you've cleaned the lens area, as well as the mouse pad.

You'll be amazed what a small mouse pad will do for an optical mouse. You shouldn't "technically" need one, as they're supposed to work fine on most surfaces except glass. Howerver, sometimes dust or grooves interfere with things, try a mouse pad or an exceptionally smooth surface and see if that helps.
