How to Use Camera Lens Adapter Rings?

    • Purchase a close up lense if you are photographing things like plants, insects, jewelry and maybe even food items. Close up lenses, which screw into the front of the camera lens, contain multiple elements of optical glass and are used to change the focus range of the lens. They come in different magnifications and are sometimes sold in sets. A 1X adapter will halve the focus range of your lens. If your lens could focus at 3 feet, you can now focus at 1.5 feet. With a 2X adapter you could focus .75 feet. They dramatically reduce the depth of field, as is true with all macro photography. They are also usually the least expensive accessory lenses to purchase
    • Telephoto Adapter: Buy telephoto adapters if you need to extend the telephoto range of the lens. These also contain multiple optical glass elements and are attached to the rear of the lens and then directly onto the camera. They are more expensive than close lenses and are very camera specific since they need to couple with the camera's autofocus and exposure mechanisms. You need to also be conscious of the weight it will add to the lens. A 2X adapter will turn a 200mm lens into a 400mm lens. It can also be used with zoom telephoto lenses. These adapters are great for sports and wildlife photography and are also used in street photography
    • Bellows: Purchase an adapter that will alter the perspective of your camera in the same way a view camera does if you are doing architectural and scenic photography or any assignment where the perspective is critical. These adapters screw into the front of the lens and allow you to tilt the front element to alter the perspective and eliminate converging lines. You can always adjust perspective in post production, but you will lose some of the image in the editing process
    • Fisheye Adapter: Buy special effects lens adapters like the fisheye adapter if you need to turn your wide-angle lens into a fisheye lens. You can also find polarizing filters to minimize reflections from water and glass. Both of these adapters are useful in general photography and provide a function that cannot be achieved in post production. There are also multiple image adapters, clear spot adapters, soft focus adapters and many more. These are much less useful in the digital age since all of the special effects can be easily created in post production

Great build quality

I got this so I didn't have to buy another Circular Polarizer and Neutral Density Filter set for my Canon 85mm 1.8.

I love the fact that I can stack filters on it without worrying about vignetting as well.

Simple, works great

There seems to be a lot of discussion regarding good (i.e. expensive) filters as opposed to cheaper ones. This allows you to try out better filters on several lenses to make up your mind.

It works!

This adapter does what it says and it pretty flat.
I like this method better than using multiple step-up adapters as it's flatter and sturdier.

It was well manufactured. Fit to my Canon EF 85 mm f1.8 perfectly. I use this in order to put my B+W UV filter on it. It works!

ring

Thank you for who ever created step up rings! This one works great and really saves me a TON of money from having to buy different sized filters. Just buy filters for your largest lens and then buy step down adapters for the rest!

Inexpensive way to make good use of your filters
00:00:00 09-17-2009
A step up adapter is a good tool for getting the most out of your expensive filters. Graduated filters don't work so well using this technique, but imagine using one filter type for multiple thread sized lenses. Step-up rings can also be stacked to get even more use out of a single filter. Keep in mind though that the closer the filter is to the lens, the better the results will be.

Nice idea
00:00:00 08-12-2009
This is a great idea. Price is great and the fact that I can use any of my lenses with one set of step-up rings. I bought my step up lens filters adapter ring and have no problems with the fit. They are solid, definitely consider this product if you are every expanding your lens collection and want one good polarizer and a set of step-up rings to fit them all.

You must have it

A useful feature is that this step-up ring can be used to prevent vignetting. Sometimes a filter can produce vignetting, especially on wide angle lenses. Stacking filters may cause vignetting as well. If using the adapter ring with larger sized filters, the problem may be eliminated as the filter rings are expanded out beyond the lens.
