Teach kids a few basic crafting skills and they can make their own custom holiday decorations. Whether the kids are decorating a holiday tree for their room or helping to set a holiday table, many kids enjoy creating hand-crafted decorations. Look for supplies in your pantry or backyard and at local craft stores.
The outside lid of a Mason jar can become a cylindrical frame for a kids' holiday photo ornament. Kids can paint the metal to suit the holiday theme with acrylics; red for Christmas and Valentine's Day, pastels for Easter and orange for Thanksgiving. Tie coordinating ribbon around the frame to make a hanger and glue a seasonal photo inside the rim. Hang the holiday ornament on a Christmas or Easter tree. The photo ornaments also work as place cards for your holiday table. Omit the hanger and add a photo of your guest.
Pipe cleaner ornaments are holiday projects suitable for young children. Select pipe cleaners in appropriate holiday colors to shape into hearts, candy canes, snowflakes and bells. Before shaping the pipe cleaners, kids can thread on beads and jingle bells to add color and dimension. Hang the pipe cleaner ornaments using bits of looped ribbon.
With a supply of craft bells, colorful beads and fishing line kids can make their own holiday garland. Tie a loop secured by a thick knot in one end of a strand of fishing line. Kids as young as four years old can easily slide beads and bells over the strand to create the decorative garland. Finish with a knotted loop at the end and hang the garland around doorways, windows and holiday trees. To make old-fashioned popcorn garland, kids will need a needle threaded with a long, doubled strand of sewing thread and a large bowl of popcorn. Older kids can pierce the center of the popped corn with the needle and slide the pieces along the thread to create the garland.
Older kids can make sparkling pine cone decorations using spray paint, glue and glitter. Coat the pine cones with one to three coats of color with spray paint; let the paint dry between coats. To make the painted pine cones sparkle, apply liquid craft glue to the tips using a paint brush. Sprinkle glitter onto the wet glue and let it dry. These pine cone decorations work as elements in a holiday tabletop centerpiece, or as a grouping in a holiday basket. Large conical-shaped cones can become miniature holiday trees.
