How to Clean Internal Computer Parts



Internal computer parts have a tendency to get coated with a layer of dust and dirt over time which can lead to occasional localized overheating. Cleaning this dust and dirt off the parts is essential to proper maintenance of typical computer systems. The dust is drawn in by the system cooling fan and sticks to any parts in the air path. It's especially noticeable on fans and ventilation holes or slots in the case and on the power supply unit. Computer users who smoke or own dogs or cats typically have more dust and dirt than those who don't.

Instructions

• Back up any important information contained on the hard drive prior to cleaning the computer.
• Power down the computer and shut off the outlet strip or disconnect the power cord. Remove the case cover using a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws if necessary.
• Pull loose dust balls out by hand and throw them away if excessive dust has accumulated inside the case.
• Blow compressed air into the case directly onto the components to remove most dust from the system. Hold fans still when blowing on them and focus on the power supply unit and air intake first, and then work in to the CPU fan, motherboard, case air inlets and drives. Use a significant amount of air volume and moderate pressure to clean most of the dust out of the computer. This is often sufficient for preventative maintenance cleaning on a regular basis.
• Wipe down the case and frame with the soft cloth. Wipe the components inside the computer with the soft cloth. Use a small brush to get to hard-to-reach locations that have accumulated dust or dirt.
• Dab a cotton swab into isopropyl alcohol 91 percent and use a gentle rubbing motion to clean smaller components.
• Remove expansion cards if desired and rub the gold contacts with the pencil eraser followed by a clean cloth with a dab of the alcohol to moisten it. Reinstall the cards.

Tips & Warnings

• Take the computer outside and blow the dust out of it using a compressor with a variable volume blower tip for excessive dust accumulation. Isopropyl alcohol 70 percent contains 30 percent water and can cause more corrosion on sensitive parts than Isopropyl alcohol 91 percent, which contains only 9 percent water. Buy a small "pancake" air compressor to use if cleaning more than one computer as it will pay for itself after the first 10 uses due to the cost of compressed cans of air.
• Hold fans still when cleaning with compressed air to avoid breaking the fins or sending an electrical signal into the circuit. Allow a powered compressor to blow air out the tip for at least 20 seconds before using it to clean the computer to avoid blowing trapped moisture or condensation from the tank directly onto the circuits.
