How to Install a Hard Drive Cooling Fan?

• Hard drives are an often overlooked device when designing thermal management for a computer. Hard drives are built to operate within a specific range of temperatures for optimal performance and product longevity. The installation of a hard drive fan reduces the overall temperature of the hard drive, thus increasing performance and life of the hard drive within the computer system

Instructions:

• Power down and unplug the computer
• Remove the computer's side access panel, which may require the removal of two screws from the back of the computer that secure the panel in place
• Dispel any accumulated static electricity before working inside the computer by touching the metal frame of the computer or using the anti-static wrist strap. Touch the metal frame frequently while working inside the computer if the wrist strap is not used to dispel any built-up static electricity
• Locate the hard drive at the front of the computer below the CD and DVD drives and remove the four screws holding it in place in the hard drive bay. Unplug the cables connected to the back and slide it out of the hard drive bay
• Turn the hard drive over so the green circuit board is facing up
• Locate the four unused screw holes on the underside of the hard drive near the four corners of the circuit board. These mounting holes are placed in these positions to allow for after-market coolers to be installed
• Place the hard drive fan over the hard drive, lining up its mounting holes with the mounting holes on the surface of the hard drive
• Insert one screw into each mounting hole and tighten them until there is a firm grip. Take care not to over tighten the screws as damage to the hard drive and cooling fan may occur. Only use enough force to secure the cooling fan to the hard drive when tightening the mounting screws
• Connect an available four-pin white "Molex" power connector from the power supply to the power cable connected to a hard drive cooling fan. This powers the fan and turns it on automatically every time the system is turned on
• Replace the hard drive into the hard drive bay and secure it back in place with the screws on the sides
• Slide the side access panel back into place, replace the screws, and plug in the computer
