DJ Lighting Tips

Although DJs are hired to play music, many choose to accentuate their show with a lighting display in which they accompany their songs with choreographed colored lights. Lighting displays vary greatly in design and complexity: while some DJs make do with a single strobe, others accessorize their set with a lighting display elaborate enough for a Britney Spears concert. There are, however, a number of tips that all DJs should follow when designing a lighting display.

Keep Enough Light to See What You're Doing

• The first rule of DJing is to make sure that you have enough light to be able to see what you're doing. If you're working with turntables, make sure that you keep a desk light on both the turntables and the mixer so you can switch successfully. This may seem elementary, but many DJs forget this when they're playing dark venues, leaving them straining to see their setup clearly.

Know Your Event

• Lighting should always be based on the kind of event you're playing. Consider the people who'll be attending, the music you're playing and the kind of mood you're trying to create. If you're playing a rave, consider using laser lights and strobes for that futuristic feeling. If you're playing a wedding reception, consider warmer, more sedate lighting, such as with cans. If possible, scout out the space ahead of time and ask the event planners who will be attending. Also, be careful about using fog machines: while they can create brilliant lighting effects, they should be avoided at events where elderly people are in attendance, as fog machines can cause occasional respiratory problems.

Match Musical Elements to Lighting Styles

• Often DJs will attempt to match particular musical elements to certain styles of lightning. DJ Lightsmith has developed a particular system of coordination for the beat, the bass and the melody. He suggests syncing up the beat of the song with par cans and LED spots, which can be programmed to particular beats per minute (BPMs). For the bass line, he suggests "fancy lights," which he defines as something more complex than a par can. For the melody, he recommends deploying moving head and scan lights.

Don't Overdo It

• Although lighting can greatly enhance a show, don't overdo it. Elaborately choreographed displays are entirely appropriate in certain situations and in certain venues. For example, if you're Paul Van Dyk and you're playing anthemic trance music to 2,000 people at the Ministry of Sound, then yes, absolutely you should bring out the big guns. But if you're playing a more intimate gathering or playing a subtler genre (say, cool jazz) pyrotechnics will only take distract from what people really came for-the music.
