Kinds of Magic Production Boxes:

Magic production boxes are a staple of stage and illusion shows. Production boxes are usually gimmicked in such a way that after showing the box empty, various animals or props may be produced from within. Production boxes are a useful option when a bulky load cannot be produced using traditional sleight of hand.

• Drawer Box
• The drawer box is an old and clever principle for production. The box is normally rectangular, containing a drawer with a knob. The drawer is opened and shown to be empty. Upon closing the drawer and making incantations, the drawer is opened to be full of handkerchiefs, coins or an animal. The drawer box is commonly used as a pocket-sized prop to produce candy or money and can be constructed using household items. The main advantage of a drawer box is that it instantly resets, allowing the drawer to be shown empty or full as often as desired.
• Mirror Production Box
• The mirror production box is a square box with a mirror that is not apparent to the audience and flaps on the front and top. Both flaps are opened, showing the box to be empty, and subsequently a production is made from the top of the box. This type of box is typically used on stage as a production for larger items like a rabbit or numerous props. The principle used allows it to also be used for vanishes, though this is not common.
• Square Circle
• The "square circle" is a production set often used on stage. It consists of a tube (the circle) and a box with no top or bottom (the square). The magician presents the square circle, and removes the square and circle separately, showing them each to be empty. When the circle is placed within the square, a large quantity of items may be produced from within. The square and circle may be shown empty multiple times and productions made sporadically throughout the show.

How to Make a Magic Wood Box:

With some simple wood working and a few hours, you can create a magic wooden box that will impress your kids and be a hit at birthday parties. The magic box works by using double mirrors to create an illusion that the box is empty. The magician can then place an object inside the box and it will "disappear." The audience, not knowing the box is divided into two halves by mirrors, will just see an empty box.

• Instructions
• Jupiterimages/Comstock/Getty Images Use the cold saw to cut diagonal edges from the ends of your eight wooden strips. Then, cut each at the side to create a 45 degree angle. Glue these pieces together to create two frames, like picture frames.
• Jupiterimages/BananaStock/Getty Images Take four of your plywood panels and glue them together to make a box. Use your two picture frames for the top of the box and one of the sides. Glue them together using woodworking glue and leave to dry.
• Jupiterimages/BananaStock/Getty Images Measure the space in the middle of the frames. Cut the two remaining plywood panels to the same size so they will sit inside the frames and can be opened like a door.

It's important to use matte paint, as it will absorb the light and stop the audience from seeing the mirrors inside. Once the black paint is dry, paint four white strips moving through the box. This will help the optical illusion as well.

A bright color is used to draw the audience members' attention and to stop them from clearly seeing the inside of the dark box. Once the outside has dried, cover it in lacquer for a shiny finish.

It is best to get them cut to size at a hardware store. Once the mirrors are inside, they will create an illusion that the box is empty. When you place an object on one side of the mirror it will "disappear."
