This is helpful shade for bright sunny days where you normally would not be able to see the LCD screen clearly. This may be left on all the time as well, for screen protection. A nice feature is that you can easily detach the the pop up shade part when it is not needed and not have to remove the wholecover. This will extend the back of the camera by about a 1/2". I had already been using the canon extension for the view finder and this also easily attaches. It looks like it's part of the camera and reasonably priced.
