Every person that shows their webcam to you will open a new screen so as to have different screens for the webcam. For the chat, you can invite them for voice conference or else, click your "Preferences > Messages : tick the box [Show the messages in a single window] and click OK. All the messages you will receive from your multiple friends will be shown in a single window.
