How to Convert PCMCIA to USB:
- Purchase a PCMCIA-to-USB adapter from a computer store
- Connect the card end of the PCMCIA adapter to the PCMCIA card slot on the laptop or computer. Push the card end into the slot until it is firmly in place
- Connect the USB device that you want to connect to your laptop or computer. Connect the USB device to the USB port on the PCMCIA adapter you just installed. If the USB device you are using came with a USB cable, connect 1 end to the USB device (such as an iPod, cell phone or camera) and the other end to the adapter card USB port
How to Use an Express Card:
- Determine what kind of Express Card you are using. The Express Card slot itself is standardized, and the Express Card website explains that 95% of notebook computers have a built-in slot. However, the Express Cards themselves are not standardized; there are two different types of Express Cards that fit into a standard Express Card slot. If you are using a 54-mm express card, a small part of the card will protrude 22 mm further than the rest of the card. In the case of a 34-mm card, the entire card is a perfect rectangle, with no irregular protrusions
- Turn on your computer, allow it fully boot up and log in as you normally would
- Insert the Express Card into your computer. If you are using a 54-mm card, the protruding piece should be on the left-hand side when you insert the card. If the protrusion is on the right, then you are inserting the card upside down. On a 34-mm card, the side with the manufacturer's logo is usually the top. For a 34-mm card, slide the card as far left as you can into the Express Card slot. It may seem like the 34-mm card is too small for the slot, but if you push it to the left, it will lock into place and work just fine. Remember, the Express Card slot is designed to be big enough for both the 54-mm model and the smaller 34-mm model
- Wait a moment while your computer identifies the new hardware
- Follow on-screen prompts to install necessary drivers for the Express Card. In most cases, your PC will automatically detect the hardware and install any necessary drivers. However, in rare instances you may need to insert a driver disk into your computer's CD-ROM drive when prompted by the computer. If you did not receive a driver disk upon purchasing your Express Card, then no disk is needed
- Click on the "Start" menu and select "My Computer" once the card's drivers are done installing. Underneath the "devices with removable storage" heading, you should see an icon labeled "Express Card." Double-click on this icon in order to access your Express Card for saving and storing files. In the case of video, Internet, or audio Express Cards, double-clicking on the icon will alternatively bring up settings for the device. Configure any settings as desired, or simply click "OK" to retain the default settings. The device is now ready to use

If you need USB 2.0 connectivity for an old laptop this is the ideal solution. I highly recommend it. <br/>I had an older 4 port card that finally died after a few years of ownership & thought I'd give this one a try because of the low cost & small profile.

Needed USB 2.0 ports for a 2002 model laptop, and needed a PCMCIA card unit without a huge external protrusion. the card operates perfectly. External hard drive, digital camera, WiFi dongle - so far I haven't thrown anything at it the card can't handle. And the laptop shuts down properly again.

I took a chance and installed the OWC driver and - voila! - the card operates perfectly. External hard drive, digital camera, WiFi dongle - so far I haven't thrown anything at it the card can't handle. And the laptop shuts down properly again.

I have an old HP laptop where the USB hardware failed. (Seems common for HP since I've also had two HP desktop PC that had to have their USB hardware replaced.) Anyway, this card gives me two working USB slots so now I can use my wireless mouse and plug my Droid in or use Bluetooth again! OS: Fedora 12 & Ubuntu 10.04, both OS's used the card with no additional software needed. BTW: This PCMCIA RS232 Card is my second card, the first was destroyed by a two year old.

This is an excellent PCMCIA Card Reader. I use Windows XP and the CardBus was automatically installed without the included driver disk! I highly recommend this item. Great for connecting USB peripherals that use only a small amount of power (Laptop cooler fan, Wireless keyboard/mouse, External speakers, Printer, etc.) and the card fits flush with the side of your laptop which facilitates portability.

I have an old Dell that came with just 2 USB slots, this thing was dirt cheap and worked perfectly. Am using it right now, have had it for 6 months. Only down side I could find, sometimes when removing a new USB item, the whole card pulls out, not often, but it happens. This thing is flush with the casing of the laptop and works at USB 2.0 speeds. Would definitely buy it again.

What size is an ExpressCard module?
There are two sizes of ExpressCard module. One is 34mm wide (express card/34) and the other is 54mm (express card/54). Both modules are 75mm long and 5mm high. Host systems can provide any combination of slots for either width of module. It should be noted that the 34mm module has the advantage that it will also work in the slot designed for the 54mm wide modules but not vice versa.

How is ExpressCard technology different from PC Card?
Express card technology draws upon many of the features of existing PC card technology. It balances size and utility, reliability and durability, and features hot plug-n-play and auto-configuration.

What is ExpressCard technology?
Express card technology is the name of a new standard introduced by PCMCIA in spring 2003. The Express card standard delivers thinner, faster and lighter modular expansion to desktop and notebook computer users. Consumers can add hardware capabilities such as memory, wired and wireless communications cards and security devices by simply inserting these modules into their systems.
