How to Choose a Battery for an RC Car
Your choice of a battery for an RC car can make a great deal of difference in the speed and efficiency of your car. Most battery packs used for an RC car are similar in make, usually containing six individual cells, assembled in a line and connected to your car using a two-pin plug. It's what's inside the packs that makes the difference, and in the process of finding the battery that's right for your car, you'll have to consider a number of variables before making your final choice.- 1
Choose the battery type that's most appropriate for your RC car. There are four types to choose from: NiCd (Nickel-Cadmium), NiMH (Nickel-Metal-Hydride), Li-ion (Lithium-Ion) and Li-Poly (Lithium-Polymer). NiCd batteries are difficult to dispose of because of the cadmium, and over time lose the ability to maintain a complete charge, but can easily attain a peak charge, increasing efficiency. NiMH batteries can be charged to higher capacities than NiCd batteries without losing the ability for maximized charging, though they can be damaged when overcharged. They also lack the toxic materials that make other batteries difficult to dispose of. Li-ion batteries can hold twice the charge of NiCd batteries and can adjust the rate of discharge of energy while also avoiding possible overcharges, but the added efficiency comes with greater cost. Li-Poly batteries are even more powerful than Li-ion batteries with twice the power, though overcharging them can cause them to burst into flames. They are also lighter than other battery types.
- 2
Choose the capacity you wish to use for your car. The capacity of battery packs is listed with a milliamp-hour rating. The higher the milliamp rating, the greater the capacity, which means the longer the battery will provide power before requiring recharging.
- 3
Examine the battery pack to determine if the batteries are matched or not. Matched battery packs contain individual batteries that are rated to discharge equally. With all the cells in a battery pack discharging equally, the efficiency of the pack on the whole is improved. Choose a matched pack, especially when using NiCd batteries.
FAQ About RC Batteries
RC equipment requires batteries to power on-board equipment like servos and receivers. There are several type of batteries used in the RC hobby. It is very important to use the correct charger for each battery. Lithium polymer batteries, for example, will catch fire if charged incorrectly.
How Are Alkaline Batteries Used in RC ?
An alkaline battery is your standard 1.5-volt battery that is used up and thrown away. These are commonly used in low-end RC toys. Over time alkaline batteries become expensive to replace.
What Are NiCad Batteries?
Nickel Metal Hydride batteries are very similar to NiCads. They are rechargeable and provide 1.2 volts per cell. NiMH cells are lighter in weight than NiCad cells, but they are also more fragile. These cells are acceptable for RC planes but are better for cars and boats.
What Are LiPo Batteries?
Lithium Polymer batteries are the most popular cells for RC airplane and helicopter enthusiasts. These rechargeable batteries deliver 3.7 volts per cell, and are very lightweight compared to other batteries. LiPo packs can be recharged up to 500 times.
What Are A123 Batteries?
These Lithium Ion batteries have the same voltage as LiPo cells but can withstand a lot of abuse. These cells are larger and heavier then LiPo cells but they can be charged at high rates, which drastically cuts charging time.
