- First of all it is recommended to consult the internet to know what kind of battery could be repaired. But one needs to know a battery which is apt to leak should not be repaired, as it could be unsafe. But most batteries have the complex construction and therefore cannot be repaired at all. Some batteries can, but for that one should have specific tools. It is much cheaper and more wisely to buy a new one
Notebook Battery Removal
- Sometimes a damaged battery just needs a little calibration. Such work can be done in local laptop repair shops. But if a battery is really damaged, one should better throw it out to save money and nerves. Therefore one should be aware of the type of the battery when he is going to have repaired, or firstly to check the possibility of such repair in a store before buying
- But one must remember a laptop battery is one of the most important parts in a unit, and taking care of it is the quite rational thing
Extending Battery Power
- Whenever you are using your laptop near a power source, use the A/C adaptor. However, sometimes you will be forced to use your laptop with no access to a wall outlet, and the battery will run low. Here are three things you can do to extend the remaining power in the battery
- First, if your laptop processor features a power-save mode, switch over to power-save mode. This will slow the laptop by up to 50%, doubling battery life for that time period
- Second, turn off extraneous energy-sucking elements. The major power vampires in your laptop are the hard drive, the CD and DVD drives, any networking devices, and any excessively bright screen settings
- Third, you can double overall battery capacity by installing a second battery. Your laptop must have a universal bay in order to do this. All you have to do is remove the CD-ROM or floppy drive and put a battery in its place
How to Test a Laptop Battery?
Testing a laptop battery allows you to determine if it has any remaining charge. The best way to test a battery is to connect it to a laptop and turn the unit on. However, there are several other ways to determine if your laptop battery has any charge.
- Test your laptop battery with a test light. Check the test light first to make sure it works. Connect the light to a metal ground source. Check the test light on a battery that you know works. If the test light glows, it's good. Place the light's test end into the battery's positive port. If the light glows, your battery is good.
- Check your laptop battery with a battery tester. Put one end of the tester in the battery's positive port, and the other in a negative port. The tester will read how much life is in the battery, if any.
- Hook your laptop battery up to a multimeter. Follow the process in Step 2 to connect the meter and determine how much charge is left in the battery. Most multimeters are electronic, but some have gauges that move to a certain point.
- Place the laptop battery on a battery charger. These are mostly used for cars. Battery chargers generally indicate if a battery is good, bad or needs a charge.
How to Recondition a Laptop Battery?
Like all rechargeable battery packs, laptop batteries eventually lose their ability to hold a full charge. Although it's not possible to make a battery pack perform like new again (unless the cells are replaced), it is possible to improve cell performance by reconditioning or calibrating some laptop battery packs.
- Insert the battery into the laptop. Plug the laptop in and allow the battery to fully charge (the battery indicator light turns off on most laptops when the battery is completely charged). Restart the computer.
- Disable hibernation temporarily. In Windows XP for example, click "Start" in the task bar, then click on "Control Panel," and then "Power Options." Select the "Hibernate" tab then uncheck "Enable Hibernation." Click "OK" to save the settings.
- Discharge the battery. In Windows XP for example, click on "Control Panel," "Performance and Maintenance," "Power Options," and then "Power Schemes." Make a note of the settings under the "Plugged In" and "Running on Batteries" columns so you can reset them later.
- Set all six options to "Never" from the drop-down lists. Click "OK" to save the settings and disable power management.
- Unplug the laptop, but do not turn it off. Run the laptop until the battery is completely discharged (the Power/Standby light will blink) and the laptop shuts down.
- Plug the laptop back in, allow it to fully charge again, then restart the computer. Enable hibernation (reverse step two), then enter your original performance settings in "Power Schemes" (see step three).

11-25-2010- Other Thoughts: Received this battery a couple days ago and have been impressed since. My old battery would last about 40 minutes before it would so graciously turn off with no warning. I saw this as the sign to get a new battery. I was pleasantly surprised to find this battery.

03-11-2010- Other Thoughts: This laptop battery is so awesome. I get on average 5-6 hours of charge off of this battery, which is way more than I could have ever imagined.

05-06-2010- Other Thoughts: I bought this battery to replace the worn-out battery on my 2-year-old battery. The one I received didn't fit the computer and it didn’t look like the battery pictured above. Return was easy, but disappointed that the battery didn't fit. Possibly my mistake, as the product description says.

03-16-2011- Other Thoughts: I got this to replace a dead battery. The price was great, compared to getting one direct. So I was a bit skeptical about performance. But now it's been 3 months and it still works fine. Charges just as fast, and the charge lasts as long as the original battery did. There is always a risk when buying a battery not made by the manufacturer, but I have found this one to work just as well as the first one. I hope it lasts even longer than the original.

09-22-2010- Other Thoughts: I was tired of forking out over $100 for original batteries, which always lasted less then 6 months. After having been burnt by twice, I decided to give this battery a try, and so far I couldn't be happier. I saved a bundle and the battery has been working as expected so far. If you, like me, are tired of the poor quality of batteries, this is the item you are looking for. Buy it, save a bundle, and you now have a battery that will actually last! Highly recommended product.

- How long does a IBM laptop battery last? When should I consider replacing mine?
All rechargeable batteries wear out with time and usage. As time and cumulative use increase, the performance will degrade. For the typical user, noticeable reduction in run time generally will be observed after 18 to 24 months. For a power user, reduction in run time generally may be experienced prior to 18 months. We recommend buying a new IBM laptop battery when the run time does not meet your needs.
- How should I choose between two batteries with different Watt hours (Whr) available on one system?
Higher Watt hours (Whr) on the same system under the same operating conditions will generally deliver longer battery run time. For example, if you compare the same system, running the same applications.
- How long does it take for a IBM laptop battery to fully recharge?
The charge time varies depending on the system. If the system supports ExpressCharge, the battery typically will have greater than 80% charge after about an hour of charging, and fully charge in about 2 hours with the system off.
