How to Change the Battery on an iPod?

    • The iPod, which began as a basic mp3 player, now has a number of different functions. Using an iPod, users can watch videos, listen to music, as well as make phone calls and access the Internet on some of its newest models. The iPod runs on an internal battery pack, which can sometimes get disconnected or simply stop functioning. If this happens, there is a simple process that allows users to reconnect or change their iPod battery themselves.
    • Instructions
    • Use the flat edge of something such as a knife or guitar pick to separate the two halves of the iPod's external case. Run the flat edged object around the border of the iPod to pop the case loose. After you have done this, you may notice that the two halves are still not coming apart. The front and back cases are held together by small plastic clips; you must squeeze the side of the front case inwards to get these clips to disengage
    • Open the iPod gently. You will see a small ribbon connector that connects the front and back cases together. You will not need to disconnect this ribbon, simply lay both pieces flat directly next to each other. This will give you plenty of room to replace the battery without having to disconnect then reconnect the ribbon
    • Remove the iPod's hard drive from the device by lifting up on the black tab located at the bottom of the hard drive. The device's hard drive is the blue rectangular piece that takes up most of the internal section of the iPod
    • Remove the battery pack from the iPod. The battery pack rests underneath the hard drive. Once the hard drive is removed, you will see a smaller black rectangular piece with wires leading away from it; this is the battery pack you must remove. The battery should lift out with no problems, however, if it is stuck in place, run a flat, thin object around its border to free it from the device. Follow the wires to where they connect to the body of the iPod. Grip the white plastic base of the wires and pull the battery pack free from the device
    • Attach the new battery in the same exact spot you removed it from. Push the white plastic base of the new battery's wire into the space allotted for it and lay the battery pack flat, making sure it fits perfectly back in the space you removed the old battery from. If you do not snap the battery pack down entirely, the other components will not fit correctly. Reassemble the remaining internal pieces by reinserting them in the exact same location from which you removed them

    Li-ion Battery Storing Instructions:

    • Do not let the first charge time to reach 12 hours. In our purchase of digital products with lithium batteries, a lot of store clerk will tell us that the first recharge time should reach 12 hours. In fact this is not quite right. Li-ion battery has been activated in the factory, the addition of lithium battery automatic discharge rate is very low, so we do not need to first charge the lithium battery a long time like an ordinary Ni-Cd / Ni-MH battery. Lithium battery can be used when full, usually after charge and discharge 3 to 5 full cycles (from full to run out as a full cycle) lithium batteries can achieve the best
    • Do not use inferior charger. A lot of friends give very much love on their digital products, but ignore the lithium battery. When use the charger, if you can not use the original charger, it's necessary to use a good quality brand charger with an overcharge protection function. Inferior charger can make li-ion battery "short-lived," or even re-charge the battery to burst
    • Do not often overcharge. Overcharge a long time will let the internal battery always in the "excitement" high-temperature state, which are all negative to lithium battery and charger. Therefore, the standard charge is to charge full. If the charger does not with an over-charge protection, it is very likely to make the lithium battery into a little bomb
    • Do not touch metal objects. Lithium battery contact point need to always cleaning, but should pay attention to that when in storage and carry, do not let the battery contact point contacts with metal objects, which is easily lead to short-circuit, make the lithium battery short-lived
    • Do not often use in hot or cold environment. Batteries have their own work and storage environment, for a long time at high and low temperature environment, will cause bad effects to the lithium battery use time and life expectancy
    • Do not disuse or not to charge for a long time. If for some reason, the digital devices and lithium batteries may have more than 3 months idle time, then we need to on a regular basis to charge the lithium battery a certain amount of electricity, and then save (each charge accounts for the total battery capacity of 30% ~ 70%, depending on storage time and battery capacity)
    • Do not immediately use the battery has just finished charging. The battery temperature is very high, if acted upon immediately into the DC and other equipments, the internal temperature of electronic equipment likely to cause rapid increases, which is extremely important to life span of electronic components

    Li-ion Battery Charging Methods:

    • Use a battery charger designed for lithium ion batteries. A charger for lithium batteries should be able to deliver 3.8 to 4.2 volts per cell. Never use a low power (trickle charge) system. This can cause lithium to adhere (plate) to the anode and oxygen to be generated at the cathode, producing an extremely flammable mixture. Lithium ion batteries come with an internal "safety board" that automatically terminates charging when the current rate drops to 10 percent of the initial charge rate, indicating the battery is fully charged. The best chargers also feature a timer you can set to stop the charging process at a preset time
    • Place the lithium ion batteries in the charger and make sure it is plugged in. Depending on how much power remains in the battery it will take two to six hours to fully charge most lithium ion batteries. As an added safety precaution, set the timer to avoid the possibility of overcharging
    • Charge the batteries at the appropriate voltage setting. To maximize the charge, the voltage should be set at 4.20 volts per cell. However, you can extend the useful life of lithium ion batteries by using a slightly lower setting (about 4.10 volts for most lithium ion batteries). This will give you about an 80 percent charge
    • Charge lithium ion batteries to about 40 percent before storing them for long periods. It is not good for the battery to bring it to full charge and then store it, since this will reduce the battery's useful life. To further extend battery life, recharge stored batteries to the 40 percent level every few weeks (check the battery specifications for recommended times)

I replaced two iPod batteries using these kits. One was for an iPod mini and the other was for an iPod 30GB Video. The mini was a little bit easier to replace but both took me less than 15 minutes to replace each. All I did was search for videos online on how to do it and followed the directions. It was worth not paying the $60 to have apple replace the battery. Both iPods are working like new.

Product FAQs
  • How to care and use battery?
  •  New battery comes in a discharged condition and must be charged before use. Upon initial use (or after prolonged storage period) the battery may require two to three charge/discharge cycles before achieving maximum capacity.

If the battery is not going to be used for more than a month, it is recommended that it be removed from the device and stored in a cool, dry, clean place.

It is normal for a battery to become warm during charging and discharging.
A charged battery will eventually lose its charge if unused. It may therefore be necessary to recharge the battery after a storage period.

  • My New Battery Isn't Charging, what's going on?
  • New batteries are shipped in a discharged condition and must be charged before use. We generally recommend an overnight charge (approximately twelve hours). Refer to your user's manual for charging instruction. Rechargeable batteries should be fully charged and then fully discharged 2 to 4 times initially to allow them to reach their full capacity. (Note: It is perfectly normal for a battery to become warm to the touch during charging and discharging).

New batteries are hard for your device to charge because they have never been fully charged and are therefore unformed. Sometimes your device's charger will stop charging a new battery before it is fully charged. If this happens, simply remove the battery from your device and then re-insert it. The charge cycle should start again. This may happen several times during your first battery charge. Don't worry; it's perfectly normal.

  • How can I maximize battery performance?
  • 1. Breaking in new batteries
New batteries come in a discharged condition and must be fully charged before use. It is recommended that you fully charge and discharge your new battery two to four times to allow it to reach its maximum rated capacity.

    2. Keep  batteries clean
It's a good idea to clean dirty battery contacts with a cotton swab and alcohol. This helps maintain a good connection between the battery and your laptop.

    3. Exercise  battery
Do not leave your battery dormant for long periods of time. We recommend using the battery at least once every two to three weeks. If a battery has not been used for a long period of time, perform the new battery break in procedure described above.

    4. Power management
To get maximum performance from the battery, fully optimize the notebooks power management features prior to use. Power management is a trade off: better power conservation in exchange for lesser computer performance. The power management system conserves battery power by setting the processor to run at a slower speed, dimming the screen, spinning down the hard drive when it's not used and causing the machine to go into sleep mode when inactive. The notebook user's guide will provide information relating to specific power management features. It may also be necessary to update the BIOS of the notebook in order to achieve maximum performance especially if the original battery has a lower power capacity (mAH). Please visit the notebook manufacturer's website for information regarding BIOS updates.
