What Is a Duster?
Before the Swiffer and other dusting tools, there was the duster. Simply composed of a bundle of organic feathers bound together at their bases and attached to a long handle, it had a single purpose: to swipe the dust off furniture and other objects and surfaces. Devoid of any chemicals that attract and hang on to dust, this simple tool was found in the cleaning arsenal of every decent household.
How It's Made
Today's dusters are made from synthetic materials, but the originals were made with ostrich feathers. Each ostrich feather is composed of a quill or long hollow spine and long feathers that grow on one side. The feathers on the opposite side have barbs, or tiny sharp points, that interlink with a series of even smaller barbs. This gives ostrich feathers their natural capacity to hold onto dust.
How It Works
Naturally designed to trap dust, the barbs are soft enough that they don't scratch furniture. When rubbed, they produce static electricity that traps the dust particles, and the tiny barbs hold onto the dust. When a duster starts to spread the dust or release some of its feathers, that means that it's full of dust and needs to be taken outdoors and shaken out.
History
According to the website article "How Products Are Made, Volume 7," feather dusters were invented and patented in 1876 by Susan Hibbard, a homemaker who thought that disposing of turkey feathers was a waste. Other types of feathers were also used at the time to make the dusters, but, by 1900, the durability of ostrich feathers made them the preferred choice for all types of dusting chores.Package Included:
