- Should I buy a "Smart" charger or is a basic slow charger good enough?
They tend to either undercharge or overcharge your batteries. Basic chargers apply a set charge rate and then shut off with a timer. High capacity batteries may not have received a full charge before the timer shuts off the charge especially if you are using an older charger. Batteries that are only partially discharged will receive the same timed charge and your batteries may overcharge which will cause them to overheat and could damage your batteries which will reduce your batteries life.
Basic chargers don't have protection features to prevent overcharge such as temperature and voltage drop sensors. Also if there is a power interruption during charge the timer will start over and could result in overcharging your batteries.
The smart chips allow you to safely fast charge your batteries without worrying about overcharging them. Smart chargers will charge your batteries more consistently because they can sense when your batteries have reached a full charge by measuring the voltage rise and change. They will then switch to a trickle charge which will keep the batteries fully charged until use.
The smart chips also protect your batteries from overcharge and overheating which will extend the life of your batteries. Our smart chargers also have a "conditioning" feature which when used occasionally will keep the internal chemistry of the battery in top condition by reducing the internal resistance of the battery which will result in increased capacity and run times.
- What is the conditioner feature of the charger for?
You are charging two cells together in a 2 channel charger such as the NC-10FC and they have different charges remaining or you are unsure of their discharge state. This will allow both cells to recharge equally.
You have put your batteries through many charge cycles without having fully discharged them before charging. NiCd and to a lesser extent NiMH batteries tend to store energy in larger crystalline formations near the center of the battery if this area has not been used or exercised for a long period of time. It is the last part of the battery to be discharged during normal use. These larger crystalline formations cause increased resistance to energy flow and tend to rob the battery of capacity. Conditioning your batteries occasionally with the condition feature of your charger will solve this problem by discharging the energy stored in the larger crystalline formations by eliminating the excess resistance and restoring full capacity.
- Can I use my battery charger in countries with 220V power?
Only if the charger's AC adapter plug is rated to accept the 220V power. There should be a sticker on the adapter near the plug listing the power specs. If it says 100V-240V 50-60hz it is rated to accept any countries power provided you have an adapter to allow the plug to fit into the outlet.
