How Does a Battery Charger Work?

    AAA Battery Charger

    • How does a battery charger work

    Recharging 101

    • Batteries work because of the electrochemistry between an anode/negative terminal and a cathode/positive terminal. Some battery chemistries have the property of being chargeable, so that when electrical current is fed into them, the electrochemical discharge reaction reverses itself and the battery "recharges."
    • Only some batteries have the chemistry and construction features that all them to be charged. Also, due to varying battery designs and chemistry, a given battery can only handle a certain voltage or amount of current. For example, the current fed into a lead-acid car battery would be very different from that of a lithium ion mobile phone battery.

    Simple Chargers

    • The most common type of charging device is the simple charger. Drawing electric current from a wall outlet, this provides either a constant voltage or constant current and will continue to feed it into the battery until unplugged. Usually a transformer of some kind is involved to convert the voltage. For example, North American wall outlets work on the 110-volt standard, which is inappropriate if directly applied to a 12-volt battery.
    • Most charging devices work on this model. They are cheap, but because they never stop feeding in electricity at a set rate and do not stop until unplugged from their power source, they can damage batteries with overcharging if left unattended.

    Trickle Charging

    • Trickle charging is a variant of the simple charger in that it puts out a constant flow of electricity but at a very low rate. That rate is set to match the particular battery's decay or self-discharge rate. When the battery is completely recharged, the charging therefore continues only at the rate necessary to keep the battery charged and no more. This prevents overcharging and, therefore, degradation or damage to the battery, but makes the charging process very slow.

    USB Charging

    • The USB bus on a computer is standardized with a 5-volt power output. Therefore, many computer accessories are designed to use USB outlets for battery charging. Excepting that it uses electricity drawn from a computer instead of directly from a wall outlet, it is similar to other charging methods.
    • Intelligent Charging
    • These chargers monitor either the time spent recharging, the temperature of the battery or the battery's voltage to determine when to autonomously terminate charging. This protects batteries from damage or degradation due to overcharging. Intelligent charging is becoming a popular charging feature for devices that use lithium ion batteries, as these are relatively expensive and suffer more degradation from overcharging than some other battery types.

What Should I Consider When Buying a Battery Charger?

    • When it comes to choosing a battery charger, there are so many options that it can be intimidating to choose among them. Following a few rules will guarantee that you choose a battery charger that will meet your needs and provide top quality service for years to come. A classic battery charger can handle either NiMH or NiCad batteries. A NiMH charger usually works with NiCad cells, but not vice versa. Most battery chargers are designed to work with AA or AAA batteries
    • Certain electronic products require a special format battery charger, which is usually provided by the manufacturer. The average battery charger has a capacity of either four or six batteries. Ideally, you should have at least an extra pair of charged batteries on hand at all times, so make sure your charger can handle the load
    • The typical battery charger is powered via an AC outlet. Smaller units plug directly into the outlet, making them extremely convenient for people on the go. Because they are designed with travelers in mind, these chargers usually work with both 100 and 220 volt outlets without the need for an adapter. Cheaper chargers require an external converter in the form of a power brick, which sends electricity to the charger via a power cord. This type of charger is much cheaper but also inconvenient, and it usually cannot handle 220 volts unless an expensive adapter is added
    • One feature worth spending extra money on is a charger control. An expensive battery charger has an intelligent microprocessor that switches the charger off when the batteries are fully charged. It can also recognize how much charge is originally in the batteries and only add whatever's needed. Cheaper chargers, on the other hand, charge batteries for a fixed length of time, which can overcharge the battery and shorten its life. A simple LED is typically used to indicate when the charge cycle is complete
    • The cheapest battery charger available will run just under 10 US dollars (USD), while top-quality models can cost up to 50 USD. Generally, the faster and more flexible a charger is, the more expensive it will be. The main factor that affects price is charge time - the faster a battery charger works, the more expensive it is. The fastest time available is just under sixty minutes, while the average charger takes seven to ten hours to fully charge a NiMH battery. If time is not important, choose the battery charger that offers the most features rather than the most expensive one

Product FAQs
  • What is a charge channel or charge circuit?
  • Battery chargers have one or many charge channels aka charge circuits. Each charge channel can charge one or more than one battery. fro example, it is common for a AA, and AAA battery charger to have four charge stations and two charge channels. This means that each charge channel charges two batteries in the same circuit. This is why you see lots of folks recommend that you keep your batteries in sets to optimize their charging. Mostly, this is recommended because you are probably using a charger that has two batteries in each charge channel, like our TurboCharger 4000 for example.

  • Which are better, NiCD or NiMH batteries?
  • This really depends on what you are going to use them for exactly. NiCD batteries are commonly used for power tools and in that capacity they are in many ways superior to NiMH batteries. For high drain digital devices where weight is of primary importance, NiMH batteries are the best choice. NiMH batteries are also considered an environmentally friendly battery chemistry. NiCD's are toxic and recycling them is mandatory.

  • Does rapid charging reduce the life of batteries?
  • Not significantly.  So long as it is done using a properly designed smart charger, most NiMH batteries can be recharged in about an hour without any damage or significant reduction in their life. However, NiMH batteries must only be rapid charged with a charger specifically designed for charging NiMH batteries.  Chargers designed to rapidly charge NiCd batteries can overcharge NiMH batteries.  While it may be true that rapid charging NiMH batteries can reduce battery life by a small amount (probably less than 10%), this should be more than offset by the inconvenience of always slow charging batteries.
