How to Use a Flash Diffuser:
- A diffuser creates a softer flash for more appealing photos. It is a device that is placed between the flash unit and the photo subject to decrease the effects of a direct flash. Often, a direct flash will leave sharp shadow lines around the subject's edge and create a flat image. A diffuser softens the flash by randomizing the rays of light it produces. The result is a softer image, which creates smoother shadows and gradients. Some flash units have built-in diffusers, but many on-the-spot diffusers can be created from everyday materials
Instructions:
- Locate your flash unit's built-in flash diffuser plate by looking for a small pull-tab directly above the flash bulb area. If one is present, pull it outward and lay it on top of your flash
- Place a semi-transparent material over your flash if one is not built in. You can use many types of materials, such as bubble wrap, white grocery bags or a see-through plastic lid. Different diffusions are created by the degree of transparency and the texture of the material
- Turn on the flash and connect it with your camera. Aim the camera at the subject and take the photo. The flash diffuser will spread out and flatten the light produced
- Inspect the image produced and adjust the diffuser to increase or decrease the amount of light or the area where it falls

I always either use bouce flash or something on the flash and this one is small and simple enough to use. Direct flash is just not what I want.

I am by no means a photography expert, just a learning amateur. I am still learning the ins and outs of my flash. This product definitely does help buffer the intensity of the light and reduces red eye, particularly when I photograph my dog. It fits the flash well and stays put which is important.

What is diffuser?
In optics, a diffuser is any device that diffuses or spreads out or scatters light in some manner, to give soft light. Optical diffusers use different methods to diffuse light and can include ground glass diffusers, teflon diffusers, holographic diffusers, opal glass diffusers, and greyed glass diffusers.

How does a flash diffuser work?
A flash diffuser spreads the light from the flash of a camera. In effect, the light will not come from one concentrated source (like a spotlight), but rather will spread out, bounce from reflective ceilings and walls, thus getting rid of harsh light, and hard shadows. This is particularly useful for portrait photographers, since harsh light and hard shadows are usually not considered flattering in a portrait. A diffusion filter is used in front of a camera lens to soften the image of the scene being shot.

What is DSLR pop-up flashes?
DSLR pop-up flashes are very usefull when you do not want to carry your large hot shoe flash around, but are quite limited in both power and control. They tend to make harsh shadows and blow out close subjects.
