Did you buy a new SATA hard drive and you don't have a connector for it on your power supply? Here's a solution. This is an adapter is for connecting internal storage devices that require 15 pin SATA power connectors to power supplies that only have 4 pin. For example, your drive is a newer SATA, but your computer is an older one with Molex. This IDE to SATA Power cable will convert one of your white 4-pin Molex connector on the power supply to one that your Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive can use. Serial ATA power cables are usually 4 pin cables with 15-pin connectors. SATA power cables currently use an IDE to SATA power adaptor. One end of the SATA power cable is a typical 4-pin IDE power connector (which gets connected to an unused power cable from the power supply) and the other end (15-pin connector) gets connected to the SATA hard drive.Use with IDE drives and other LP4 devices to connect to a SATA power connector. This Male To Female Power Cable connects a SATA hard drive with the standard 15 pins out, to a standard Molex 4-pin connector that connects to a power supply. The serial ATA computer bus is a storage-interface for connecting host bus adapters (most commonly integrated into laptop computers and desktop motherboards) to mass storage devices (such as hard disk drives and optical drives). Serial ATA host-adapters and devices communicate via a high-speed serial cable.

How to Use a Molex to SATA Power Connector

    Power Cable

When the hard drive industry switched from the old Parallel ATA drive interface to Serial ATA, they also switched from the old style "Molex" power connectors to a new SATA power connector. Many older power supplies lack these connectors; however, adapters are cheap and readily available, both online and at retail stores. They are fairly simple in design---with a female Molex plug on one end, and a male SATA power connector on the other, with four colored wires in between.

    Installing the Power Adapter

    • Turn off the computer and disconnect the power, as well as any peripheral cables that may be connected to the computer
    • Remove the computer's side panel and set it aside
    • Locate a free Molex cable
    • Connect the Molex-to-SATA power adapter to the Molex cable

    Installing the SATA Device

    • Insert the SATA device into an appropriate bay (5.25 inch external bay for optical devices, 3.5 inch internal bay for hard drives). Secure it using whichever tools your case may require
    • Attach the SATA end of the Molex-to-SATA power adapter to the longer 15 pin slot on the back of the device
    • Attach the SATA data cable to the other slot on the device
    • Replace the side panel, and secure it in place
    • Reattach the peripheral cabling
    • Reattach the power cable and turn on the computer. The operating system should immediately detect the new device

    Information on the Molex 4-Pin

    SATA Power Cable

The Molex company produces a wide array of connectors for various applications, many of which have four pins. However, the term "Molex 4-pin" commonly refers to a specific connector used to attach the power supply of a personal computer to other peripheral components.

    • Applications-The standard Molex 4-pin is compatible with many types of devices. It can provide power to disk drives, fans, video cards, motherboards and exterior chassis lighting, according to Play Tool
    • Function-Each of the connector's four pins leads to a color-coded cable that indicates the pin's voltage. On one end is a yellow cable supplying 12 volts of electricity. The two black cables in the middle act as a ground. At the other end is a 5-volt red cable
    • Design-The end that provides power contains female pins in a male casing; the end that receives power has male pins in a female casing. To ensure that the connector can only be attached in its correct orientation, one of its edges is beveled

Great
00:00:00 10-23-2011
My new rig has a HDD hot swap bay which is powered by molex. However on connecting up the SATA DVD the cable left me with another SATA power connector in exactly the right place. What to do. I didn't fancy running another cable up just for molex as it would've made it look untidy. The SATA power cable fit the bill nicely. Converted that SATA plug to a molex and I was away. Excellent price too.

Excellent cable plus speedy delivery
00:00:00 10-18-2011
The power cable arrived in a very short amount of time.
As for the cable itself-the quality of the cable is good and does not feel flimsy. The length is about 6 inches which is more than enough to do some basic cable management.

Molex Connector Adaptor
00:00:00 10-15-2011
I purchased this male to female power cable to power my new Graphics card as most new power supply units have only sata power adaptor i needed a molex to power it. I read online that it was a very foolish idea to do so by means of an adaptor as you would see issues arise when playing high end games but i have had none using this adaptor. Seems to be very high quality and im impressed by the connections as most of these adaptor tend to be very cheap and of no quality. A definite buy.

Great does the job, very cheap
00:00:00 10-13-2011
Works just as I expected, delivery was on time too. The lead itself is quite short, but that shouldn't be in issue with smaller cases like mine, for the price I can't fault it!

Sata power
00:00:00 10-11-2011
Not much to review with this product. It's a simple power splitter which permits a Sata drives to be powered from an existing single power cable. It does the job perfectly. Being competitively priced and delivered promptly adds to its appeal.

Nice Product
00:00:00 10-04-2011
Firstly I am very pleased with this power cable. It works very well and It was very cheap. The only reason im not giving it 5 is because the length could have been much longer, especially for people like me that have huge gaming cases.
Other than that Im very, very pleased.

Allows an older PSU to power a new SATA drive
00:00:00 09-27-2011
Having upgraded from an PATA/IDE drive to a SATA, and finding that my PSU didn't have a SATA power lead (although I did already have a SATA data lead), I found this device very handy. Because it has a power SATA connectors, it leaves me the possibility of adding drive.

Molex Connector
00:00:00 09-13-2011
Great usefull connector for upgrading your PC to Sata. Surprised that it is also useful as a Molex to Sata adapter. I believe Molex is a more common name for the single LP4 connector.
Great price too.
