Did you buy a new SATA hard drive and you don't have a connector for it on your power supply? Here's a solution. This is an adapter is for connecting internal storage devices that require 15 pin SATA power connectors to power supplies that only have 4 pin. For example, your drive is a newer SATA, but your computer is an older one with Molex. This IDE to SATA Power cable will convert one of your white 4-pin Molex connector on the power supply to one that your Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive can use. Serial ATA power cables are usually 4 pin cables with 15-pin connectors. SATA power cables currently use an IDE to SATA power adaptor. One end of the SATA power cable is a typical 4-pin IDE power connector (which gets connected to an unused power cable from the power supply) and the other end (15-pin connector) gets connected to the SATA hard drive.Use with IDE drives and other LP4 devices to connect to a SATA power connector. This Male To Female Power Cable connects a SATA hard drive with the standard 15 pins out, to a standard Molex 4-pin connector that connects to a power supply. The serial ATA computer bus is a storage-interface for connecting host bus adapters (most commonly integrated into laptop computers and desktop motherboards) to mass storage devices (such as hard disk drives and optical drives). Serial ATA host-adapters and devices communicate via a high-speed serial cable.

How to Use a Molex to SATA Power Connector

Tronixin 15 Pin SATA Male to 4 Pin Female IDE HDD Power Cable

When the hard drive industry switched from the old Parallel ATA drive interface to Serial ATA, they also switched from the old style "Molex" power connectors to a new SATA power connector. Many older power supplies lack these connectors; however, adapters are cheap and readily available, both online and at retail stores. They are fairly simple in design---with a female Molex plug on one end, and a male SATA power connector on the other, with four colored wires in between.

    Installing the Power Adapter

    • Turn off the computer and disconnect the power, as well as any peripheral cables that may be connected to the computer
    • Remove the computer's side panel and set it aside
    • Locate a free Molex cable
    • Connect the Molex-to-SATA power adapter to the Molex cable

    Installing the SATA Device

    • Insert the SATA device into an appropriate bay (5.25 inch external bay for optical devices, 3.5 inch internal bay for hard drives). Secure it using whichever tools your case may require
    • Attach the SATA end of the Molex-to-SATA power adapter to the longer 15 pin slot on the back of the device
    • Attach the SATA data cable to the other slot on the device
    • Replace the side panel, and secure it in place
    • Reattach the peripheral cabling
    • Reattach the power cable and turn on the computer. The operating system should immediately detect the new device

    Information on the Molex 4-Pin

Tronixin 15 Pin SATA Male to 4 Pin Female IDE HDD Power Cable

The Molex company produces a wide array of connectors for various applications, many of which have four pins. However, the term "Molex 4-pin" commonly refers to a specific connector used to attach the power supply of a personal computer to other peripheral components.

    • Applications-The standard Molex 4-pin is compatible with many types of devices. It can provide power to disk drives, fans, video cards, motherboards and exterior chassis lighting, according to Play Tool
    • Function-Each of the connector's four pins leads to a color-coded cable that indicates the pin's voltage. On one end is a yellow cable supplying 12 volts of electricity. The two black cables in the middle act as a ground. At the other end is a 5-volt red cable
    • Design-The end that provides power contains female pins in a male casing; the end that receives power has male pins in a female casing. To ensure that the connector can only be attached in its correct orientation, one of its edges is beveled
