How to Connect a SATA to a USB eSATA Enclosure

Serial ATA is a technological standard for communication between your CPU and drives. SATA drives utilize simple cabling that declutter your computer and makes them desirable as external storage units. Many of these external enclosures use USB 2.0 to connect with your computer. Although this makes them user-friendly for both Mac and PC users, USB technology is not capable of supporting the full transfer rate of your drive. To preserve transfer speed, many enclosures now include eSATA connectors, which read and write six times faster than USB.
- Clear your workspace of hazardous and distracting items and install or put on antistatic gear (such as grounding mats, counter shields and wrist straps)
- Attach the antistatic strap to your wrist and remove the SATA drive from its packaging. If you are using the drive from an existing system, consult your device's manual for the location of desired drive before continuing. Unplug and power down the laptop, desktop or enclosure before attempting to remove the drive
- Insert the drive into the enclosure so that the connector of the drive fits the pins in the enclosure. If your enclosure has separate cables for power and data, attach each cable to the drive individually. Do not force the cables; if the connection is loose, remove the drive and reattempt. Reassemble the enclosure as instructed by your kit. Some kits come with screws for the faceplate, while others simply snap closed
- Turn on your computer. If your enclosure has an external A/C adapter, supply power directly from a wall socket or surge protector. Choose the eSATA or USB cord from the enclosure and plug it in to the corresponding port on your computer. Do not use both plugs simultaneously

Brilliant! It does exactly what it claims to without a hiccup. I have brought loads of old hard drives back to life instantly and can now use them for long term storage. I'm always a bit concerned about buying gizmos that claim to do things but when you receive them they are a disappointment. That is certainly not the case with this tool. I had a mixture of SATA spare hard drives laying around because I could not get the files off them and this tool read each one of them without fail. One drive contained some precious photos and documents and these are now saved. This tool also allows one to format the drive ready for a clean install in another computer. I am totally delighted with it, it's well made and it's worth every penny - just wish I had got one ages ago.

This simple, inexpensive device is a marvel of ingenuity. The USB to eSATA adapter is very easy to set up, it allows you to incorporate any hard-disk into your computer. For instance, if you were upgrading from a desktop to a laptop (or vice versa), you just put the old hard-disk on the end of this device to pick up all your data. Doesn't matter if it had old-style connection or new-style (SATA), or whether it was a normal desk-top size or the smaller laptop size. Brilliant!

Wow - this bridge adapter helped me to recover data from my PC which spectacularly failed in a puff of smoke the other day. My power supply caused damage to the motherboard, so the PC would not switch on. I only had some of the data backed up (I know it is bad practice but I won't be so complacent again). Searching for info on the PC problem revealed a well known issue with the power supply, and that there would most likely be very large bill to repair the 6 year old machine, so I took the plunge and replaced the PC with a much more capable and flexible Dell laptop to allow me to take full advantage of my wireless broadband.

In days gone by, if you wanted to access a hard drive that is not installed in a system, you have to install it as a slave drive, or fit it into an external drive enclosure. And if you had a mix of 3.5" ATA, 2.5" laptop, and SATA drives, you could have to buy a couple of enclosures, then along comes this device, and all of these drive types become instantly accessible. Just plug in the power cable provided, and connect the USB lead, and in the few seconds that it takes your PC to recognise the device, you have an extra hard drive showing under "My Computer". Working in IT, I could have done with one of these a dozen times over in the last year alone. It makes any hard drive into a highly portable device, and is the ultimate solution for accessing files on the hard drive from that old PC.
