How to Choose an USB Extension Cable

If you want to connect a piece of hardware to your computer you most often use a USB cable. However, if the device is out of reach with the provided USB cable you need to obtain an extension cable. There are a few factors that can have an impact on your USB extension cable, including the length you need, the type of USB cable and what kind of USB adapter end you need to use.

- Measure the distance between the computer and the hardware you want to connect. This helps to determine the length of the USB extension cable you will need to purchase.
- Decide whether you want to connect the extension cable directly to the ports on the hardware and the computer, or if you want to plug it into the cable provided with the hardware. This will determine the type of connectors you need on the extension cable.
- Look at the actual USB ports on the computer and the hardware, or the free end of the USB cable you will use with the extension. There are A-type and B-type USB cables. The one most otten used is the A USB cable. The port on this cable is rectangular and is about 1/2-inch wide. Type B resembles a square connector and is roughly 1/3-inch inch thick. Identify the ends of your existing USB ports to make sure you pick out the correct extension cable.
- Find an extension cable that has a male connector on each end. The male connector is inserted into the USB port. You need this kind of extension cable to connect it directly to the computer and hardware.
- Look for an extension cable that has one female end and one male end. This is if you plan to use the cable already provided, plus the extension cable. The provided cable plugs into the USB port of the hardware and the other end of the cable plugs into the female end of the extension cable. You then plug the male end of the extension cable into the USB port on the computer.
How to Extend a USB Cord

Most computer hardware that connects to the system via USB data cable comes with a USB cord. However, the cable often is not long enough, especially when connecting equipment that does not need to be right next to the system, such as a scanner or printer. If this is the case with your current USB cord, it is possible to extend the reach of the connection with a standard USB extension cord- Plug the USB cable you are currently using into the USB port of the hardware you want hooked up with the computer.
- Insert the opposite end of the cable into the female end of the extension USB cable. The female end of the cable looks just like the USB connection port on a computer.
- Plug the opposite end of the USB extension cable into any one of the USB ports on the computer system.

04-15-2011- Other Thoughts: This is exactly as it is described. The cord was actually more sturdy and thicker than I expected - which is a nice bonus because they can get damaged sometimes. There was absolutely no sound degradation from this to my headphones - sounds great! Both ends are very sturdy and have a solid connection. This wasn't the cheapest extension (only one was cheaper) however, this one had MUCH better reviews. For the couple bucks I spent on it - it was money well spent. Highly recommended.

06-03-2009- Other Thoughts: Extends my HP all-in-one scanner/copier/printer to the CPU and maintains the higher 2.0 speeds. Can't ask for more. Cable is inexpensive and seems well made. We'll see how long it lasts.

05-13-2011- Other Thoughts: I wasn't expecting much for a little over two bucks, but it shipped very quickly (I got it in two days) and works fantastically so far. The cable I got looks exactly like the one in the picture, so those who have received a different style cable probably have legitimate gripes. It was packed in a bubble wrap envelope and arrived in great condition.

04-29-2011- Other Thoughts: This cable does its job, unlike some 3mm M to F extension cables you buy only to find that only one side works. It worked on the first try and the cable is thick.

05-07-2011- Other Thoughts: It's just a regular audio cable, but it's just what I was looking for since my regular earphones for my phone are so short, this does the trick!
