What is a Firewire to USB Adapter?

• Firewire (IEEE 1394) and USB (Universal Serial Bus) are two separate high-speed bus technologies that allow multiple devices to be connected to a computer. The two technologies are not integrated, and it is not possible to connect a USB device to a Firewire port either directly. A Firewire to USB adapter cable for transferring digital video (DV) is available from at least one manufacturer, but it can be expensive and difficult to find.
• Even if you don't have a Firewire to USB adapter cable, it doesn't mean that your Firewire devices are useless if you have a USB port, or vice versa. The USB 2.0 standard supports speeds of up to 480Mbps, which makes it more competitive with Firewire. On 17 November 2008, USB 3.0 specifications were released, with a transfer rate 10 times that of USB 2.0; consumer devices that use this standard were expected to be available by 2010.

How to Convert Firewire to USB 2.0



The FireWire connection port provides a superior data transfer speed to USB and is used by digital video cameras and some external hard drives. However, many Windows based computers do not have this connection, so if you have a specific device that only streams to a computer through FireWire, you need to convert the FireWire connection to USB 2.0. The data transfer is going to drop down to USB 2.0 speeds, but it does still allow you to connect the equipment to the computer.

• Attach the FireWire end of the adapter onto one of the FireWire connections on the cable. The adapter has one side that is a FireWire "In" port, while the other side is a USB "Out" port. The FireWire side is roughly half an inch long and is almost the same size as the USB, however one end of the FireWire connection port is curved and there is a "Y" shaped logo right next to the port.
• Insert the other end of the adapter into one of the USB 2.0 ports on the computer system. If you are unsure whether you have USB 2.0 installed, click "Start," "Control Panel," "System," "Hardware," then "Device Manager."
