How to Sew a Camera Strap?

All but the tiniest, pocket-sized cameras need a sturdy neck strap so that the camera can be carried around the neck or shoulder. Smart photographers wrap the neck strap around their wrists so that they won't accidentally drop their expensive cameras while shooting. Plain Jane commercial camera straps are pricey, and attractive, colorful designer straps are even more expensive. If you have good basic sewing skills and access to a sturdy sewing machine, you can make a custom camera strap that's less expensive and reflects your style.

    Instructions:

    • Top stitch the strip of leather, suede or vinyl, right-side up, onto the length of 1 1/2 inch wide nylon webbing. Line up the edge of the sewing machine foot with the edge of the stacked strips and stitch down both long sides of the strips and through both layers to create a lined webbing strap
    • Cut the narrower webbing in half lengthwise with sharp scissors
    • Melt each end of the narrower webbing by running it through the flame of a match. Douse the flame and cool the melted edge of the webbing by pressing it into the damp sponge. The melted ends will prevent fraying
    • Cut 4 squares, each 1 1/2 inch square, from the leather
    • Tack-stitch one 3/8 inch webbing strap to the non-webbing side of the lined webbing strap: Overlap the narrower webbing end over the last 1/2 inch of the strap and center it before you tack-stitch it in place. Repeat with the other 3/8 inch webbing strap on the non-webbing side of the opposite end of the backed webbing strap
    • Sandwich the end of the strap between two of the small cut squares of leather. Cover the tacked end of the 3/8 inch strap and match up the edges of both squares so that the sides are even with the sides of the strap. The ends of the leather should extend slightly less than 1 inch beyond the end of the strap
    • Stitch a rectangular top-stitch across the bottom of the lined webbing strap, stitching through both layers of leather and the lined webbing strap. Catch the enclosed, tack-stitched end of the 3/8 inch webbing strap at one side of the rectangle and stitch back across the 3/8 inch webbing strap on the other. Stitch a squat "x" across the center of the rectangle, beginning at the last corner of the rectangle. This will securely attach the two webbing straps together. Repeat on the opposite end of the lined webbing strap
    • Miter cut the unstitched ends of the leather so that they taper down from the width of the lined webbing strap to the width of the 3/8 inch strap. Cut the leather with sharp scissors and cut the tapers symmetrically on both sides of the 3/8 inch strap. Repeat on the opposite end of the lined webbing strap
    • Top-stitch the triangular shaped leather tapers together, sandwiching and stitching the 3/8 inch webbing strap in place as you sew
    • Thread a nylon slide adjuster onto the 3/8 inch strap, then follow with a nylon slide. Insert the end of the 3/8 inch strap through a camera eyelet, then back under the narrow strap and through the slide, and then through the slide adjuster. Repeat, attaching the other end of the strap to the remaining camera eyelet
    • Adjust the camera strap length using the slide adjuster and adjust the slide to hold down the excess length of the narrow webbing

Jeryerce? Pixco Digital Camera Universal Hand Strap

None!

Nice!

Adding the BG-E8 Battery Grip to the T2i makes it a much heftier camera. The Strap becomes an almost mandatory add-on to maximize the grip's ergonomics and versatility.

Good choice!

Used with the E7 Battery Grip for my 7D. The strap is good to use. However, Canon could have done it better to supply and installation instruction with the product! It is not very straight forward to fit in but I am glad lots of ppl posted the instruction on line.

Nice hand strap. Fits great on my T2i with battery grip. It was difficult to figure out how to attach, however a quick search on the internet found me an image from Canon on how to attach it.

for the price, its pretty worth it. It's made of very good quality and real soft. Seems easy to clean and makes a great addition to any camera with the use of the battery grip.

Good!

This works out very nice to help hold a heavy set-up. When I am using my 50mm f/1.4 lens with my 580 EX ii plus the battery grip, things get to be heavy; which is where the hand strap helps manage the load. When I want to utilize the vertical buttons built into the grip, the hand strap can be more of a hinder than a help. I also have my neck strap attached as well and to be honest, I am still on the fence with the setup. Sometimes it is great, but that occasional shot, all those attachments can be in the way. The other hindrance is when I have the strap tight enough to help support the extra weight; it becomes difficult to operate some of the buttons on the top that I am used to being able to access quickly. It does help when I need to, and it is very comfortable on the hand, but it is in the way when you least expect it to be. My opinion, you will either love it, or hate it.I will also add, this has no instructions as to how to route everything through the supplied clips and after about 15 minutes, I was about to throw it away until I found an illustration on the web.

Good price!

I often shoot in crowed places that are less than ideal when handling pro cameras. The added secure grip that you get from the hand strap is a welcome addition. And at a cost of only [$] one easy to afford. Never a problem shooting with one hand even in a crowd you'll never loose your grip on the camera, ever!

Really good!

I hate neck straps. They get in the way while shooting and your camera flops around on your neck. So when I ordered this item, I couldn't wait to get it. Like so many others, I had a hard time figuring out how to attach it. The sites on line were hard to see and understand. So, I thought, you can figure this out. First, get rid of the little black metal piece. It will only confuse you. That leaves the plastic piece that comes on all neckstraps. Now, both ends of the strap can be fed thru that. Feed the strap thru the pad. Feed the bottom end thru the slot on the battery grip or camera, loop back up and thru the bottom of the pad and feed thru the plastic holder. Adjust that piece to the center of the pad. Now, do the same thing with the top end of the strap. The extra length of strap can be fed thru the bottom part of the pad and won't get in the way. I wouldn't advise cutting the strap. They tend to unravel and may make it hard to feed thru if you need to remove the strap. That said, I love this strap. Now I can hand carry my camera with no fear of dropping it and don't have that pesky neckstrap to deal with.

Excellent!
00:00:00 01-01-2011
The strap fits on the Battery Grip, it allows me greater movement. I can take the camera strap off my neck and move more naturally, confident that I won't drop the camera. Negatively, over confidence. I find that the camera strapped round my neck is a constant reminder of its presence, when held in my hand secured by the strap, I have come close (it hasn't happened yet) to smacking the camera and/or lens into something. Freedom of movement may have its price.
