How to Clean an Optical Mouse:
- The optical mouse is gradually replacing the trackball mouse on most computers. While it requires less maintenance it still can eventually build up dust and dirt making the mouse jerky or unresponsive. Here's how you can clean an optical mouse.
Instructions:
- Turn off your computer and unplug the mouse.
- Look at the lens on the bottom of the optical mouse. If you see any debris see if you can blow it off. If not take a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol and lightly clean the lens.
- Next look at the small rubber pads on the bottom of the mouse. Dust and dirt tends to build up here making the optical mouse not move smoothly. Scrape as much of the gunk off as you can with your fingernail.
- If there is something sticky on one or more of the pads use Goo-Gone to dissolve it. Always make sure you don't use too much of any liquid when you clean an optical mouse. It is a piece of electronics, and you want to avoid getting liquids in to the interior.
- Take a damp cloth and wipe any remaining dirt and dust of the pads of the optical mouse.
- Plug the mouse back into the computer, and enjoy your newly cleaned optical mouse.

- How come my optical mouse does not work on my computer?
Firstly, check to see that the device is connected correctly and securely
Scan for viruses. There are a few viruses out there that can impair mouse and keyboard operations, so update your antivirus software and then scan your system, just in case
Make sure you've installed-and are using-the correct and most recent device driver.
Give it a quick cleaning. Accumulated dust, crumbs, and other debris are the natural enemies of input devices. You can solve many problems just by giving them a simple cleaning. Before you do so, don't forget to shut down your computer and disconnect your input devices.
May my answer help you!
- Can someone tell me why my optical mouse is working Intermittently?
Many possibilities. Make sure you connect it well with computer. As most optical mice are supposed to work fine on most surfaces except glass. Howerver, sometimes dust or grooves interfere with things, try another mouse or an exceptionally smooth surface and see if that helps.
- What can i do about my optical mouse skipping across the screen?
Maybe a peice of dust gets down inside where the laser is reflected to. Try to take it apart and clean it too. Either change your batteries in your mouse or clean the laser lens with a Q tip. When the power gets low, your mouse will jump, and if there's debris on the lens it will happen as well. So just try to find what is the key problems.
