O Ring Types:

There are four different types of O-rings, which are classified by the material they are made of

Teflon/PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) O-Rings

• Teflon or PTFE O-rings are generally used for chemical environments as they are resistant to most chemicals, whether basic or acidic. This tough material is also oil and steam resistant and is hard to tear and scratch. Because of its slippery surface, this type of O-ring is good for sealing moving or sliding surfaces such as those in mass spectrometer probes and valves.

Fluorocarbon Rubber O-Rings

• The fluorocarbon elastomer (rubber) O-ring was introduced to the seal industry in the 1950s and is still significant today. Good chemical resistance, a high temperature range and a low compression set make fluorocarbon rubber O-rings ideal for many sealing applications. They can be used for sealing parts in aircrafts and automobiles, scientific instruments and other devices the need to resist high temperatures and many fluids.

Silicone O-Rings

• Silicone O-rings have excellent resistance to temperature extremes, withstanding temperatures as low as --175 degrees F and temps as high as 450 degrees F of dry heat. They have relatively low strength and high coefficient of friction, making them poor candidates for dynamic sealing applications. Because of their poor strength, they are not recommended for use with most petroleum fluids, ketones or water and steam. They can, however, be used for application in dry heat or those involved with high-aniline point oils and chlorinated di-phenyls.

Buna-N (Nitrile) O-Rings

• Buna-N is standard nitrile. As an O-ring, it provides excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils, water and alcohols. It also has good resistance to acids and bases. As such, Buna-N o rings can be used for general purpose sealing, for sealing petroleum oils and silicone greases, among others. The more nitrile there is in the O-ring, the better it resists petroleum-based oils and hydrocarbon fuels
