What is a Microphone?

• A microphone (colloquially called a mic or mike; both pronounced /ˈmaɪk/[1]) is an acoustic-to-electric transducer or sensor that converts sound into an electrical signal. In 1876, Emile Berliner invented the first microphone used as a telephone voice transmitter. Microphone Polar Patterns:

 

• A microphone's directionality or polar pattern indicates how sensitive it is to sounds arriving at different angles about its central axis.
