How to Choose a Home Alarm System:

Conducting Preliminary Research- Survey your home and determine how many windows and doors you want to be 'switched,' or integrated into the home security system
- Determine possible locations for the control panel and keypads. You might find it convenient to place a keypad close to the front door. You might also want a keypad close to the bedrooms. The control panel commands the system, and the keypads allow you to program the system and turn it, or its components, on and off
- Determine how far away windows and doors are from the control panel so that you know how far wires will be routed if you choose a wired alarm system or how far a wireless system needs to communicate with sensors. Keep in mind that it is difficult to install a hard-wired security system unless your house is still under construction
- Decide whether you want a monitored security system that will be monitored 24 hours a day. The central monitoring station 'watches' your home for a monthly fee. A less expensive alternative is a basic sensor system with a dialer accessory that connects the system to your phone lines and dials preselected numbers if the house's security is breached
- Consider your lifestyle. Does anyone in the family often get up in the middle of the night for a snack? Do you have a large pet that roams the house at night? Such circumstances will influence the type of motion sensor you select and how it is installed. It may also call for you or members of your family to take trips to the keypad to prevent false alarms
Choosing the System
- Consult with a reputable home security system adviser
- Choose a system with a control panel that can monitor all the zones you have in your home. Each window or door integrated into the system is considered a zone. A basic system is capable of controlling eight zones. However, many panels permit the addition of expansion modules that allow the system to watch up to 32 zones
- Determine if the routing of the wires for a hard-wired security system might be too long. With a wired system, you will have to drill holes in walls where wires will have to be routed. If the wire run appears too long to you, choose a wireless system
- Make certain that a wireless system can perform up to the distance of the farthest zone
- Be certain that the system you choose can accept fire-protection sensors, carbon monoxide sensors and combustible-gas detectors, anti-freeze-up low-temperature switches (especially in cold climates) and water detectors. Make sure that panic buttons are or can be included
- Choose a system that is user-friendly. Make certain that inputting codes into the keypad is not a complicated process and is one that everyone in the family can learn quickly. You don't want to have to refer to the owner's manual as you input or try to interpret codes
- Work the keypad of the system you select to assure yourself that it is easy to use. Encourage all family members to work the keypad so that you will select one that everyone can use comfortably
How to Install Home Alarm Systems:
- Start the installation process by reading any documentation that came with your home alarm systems. This may include the warranty, user's manuals, installation schematics, warnings, and registration information. Know what will void your warranty and do your best to avoid these problems. In addition, by perusing the schematics you gain a fair idea how to space the various components of the home alarm kits
- Pick up your notepad and pen so that you may begin sketching where to place the assortment of components that make up your home alarm systems. The odds are good that you do not have enough contacts to wire each and every window, so it is necessary to carefully pick out the windows you believe to be the most vulnerable to intrusion. These windows may be those obstructed from street view because of trees or a fence, and do not forget to include those easily accessible with a ladder or house mounted garden trellis
- Start with the siren that will alert you to a potential intruder. Find a central location within your home where a mounted siren will be heard from any room. Even though you want it to blend into the décor of the room, do not obstruct it by placing it inside a faux cabinet. The sound must be loud and clear to get the job done. Secondly, from that location you require easy access to an electrical outlet
- Mount the back plate of the siren first and only loosely attach the actual siren. You need to first hook up other wires before being able to securely connect the bell portion of the siren setup
- Decide on a location for the control panel next. Ideally, you will place it next to the door that you generally use when entering your home. In addition, make sure that you have an electrical outlet nearby
- Install the control panel by drilling a hole into the wall and threading the wire that will hook up the panel to the outlet behind the wall. Running the wire behind the wall protects the panel from being tampered with. Sometimes it helps to connect the wire to a piece of regular wire, then threading it through the wall first
- Put in the window and door sensors next. Professionals use double sided tape to attach the magnetic portion and the switch piece to ensure a perfect connection. Go ahead and do likewise. Once you have the sensors set up perfectly, mount them permanently with the screws that came with the home alarm kits
- Run the wires and connect the sensors to form the closed circuit. Finally connect them to the siren. This is the reason why in Step 4 you did not firmly attach the bell portion of the siren to the back plate. Wire it also to the energy source and install a battery backup
- Join the siren to the control panel

04-25-2011- Other Thoughts: This is a real nice alarm. It is pretty loud and easy to install. it has a home mode where it goes off instantly and a away mode that has a timed setting. its not going to call your phone or a alarm company but it will make someone think twice about sticking around if it goes off.

03-05-2011- Other Thoughts: Nice security system which would probably the best at this price range. Window Alarm is loud enough but the best alarm is the door. Must buy if you dont want to pay for the pricey calling features or monthly services.

02-24-2011- Other Thoughts: It is very easy to install. I just used the sticker enclosed to attach them to wood doors and Vinyl window. The sound is high enough. It does what a alarm suite is supposed to do. I've NO complaints.

01-26-2011- Other Thoughts: This isn't the best alarm system but it is inexpensive, easy to set up and really noisy. I would say that it would scare away an amateur thief and gives me some peace of mind when I'm away..
