How Does an Anemometer Work?

Anemometer

• An anemometer is a weather instrument used to measure wind speed and direction. There are three main types of anemometers ranging from basic to complex.
• The spinning cup anemometer only measures wind speed. This is the most common and basic of the anemometer models. It includes 3 to 4 cups mounted on a vertical pole. The cups catch the blowing wind and turn the pole. Each time the anemometer makes a full rotation, the wind speed is measured by the number of revolutions per minute (RPM). The number of revolutions is recorded over time and an average is determined.

Windmill Anemometer

• The windmill anemometer is another basic instrument, consisting of a shaft with a tail fin and propeller mounted on a vertical pole. The wind turns the anemometer in the direction of the force, allowing the wind to be measured by RPMs.

Sonic Anemometer

• The sonic anemometer is a more complex instrument. It uses ultrasonic sound waves to measure wind speed and direction. Two pair of ultrasound devices, which send and receive sound waves, face each other 4 to 8 inches apart. They send sound waves back and forth measuring how quickly the wind travels between them, and in what direction. Sonic anemometers can take very accurate readings.
