How to Print on Fine Art Paper:
Print this article Fine art paper produces rich color and superior contrast. Printing on fine art paper is desirable for those wanting an archival-quality photograph, or even a superior graphic reproduction. Fine art paper's coated surface more readily accepts ink than plain paper does, creating more vibrant colors and sharper contrast. An inkjet printer produces the best results, as opposed to a toner-based laser printer. As fine art paper comes in a variety of surfaces and thicknesses, the process of printing involves more steps than a typical text print.- Instructions
- Access a high-quality inkjet printer. Such printers will often have "Photo" in their model name, which means you'll be using adequate inks for your expense of purchasing fine art paper. Archival inks, which are tested to last for hundreds of years, are available; the printer manufacturer's website will provide this information. Some printer inks are intended for use with either glossy or matte paper only, so determine this detail before purchasing paper.
- Select a paper that is suited to your intended outcome. Papers have a variety of brightnesses, thicknesses and surface finishes. Your image may benefit from an off-white background, or a glossy surface versus a matte one. Some printer manufacturers make fine art paper as well, though a variety of brands exist that are solely dedicated to producing quality papers.
- Clean the print heads on your printer. Fine art paper can be costly, so reducing banding and color shifts through the cleaning process will help save your fine art paper. Follow your printer's software instructions through the process of making test prints on one or two sheets of plain paper.
- Open the image in your computer's imaging software. Make any changes to contrast, color or cropping that may be necessary or desirable.
- Select "Print" from the "File" menu in the imaging software. Depending on the software, click on the "Properties" or "Page Setup" button to open further options.
- Choose the paper size, orientation and source. Most printers will default to legal size, or 8 1/2 by 11 inches. You may select from a list of other sizes, or enter in a custom paper size. Choose either tall (portrait) or long (landscape) for the orientation. Select either roll or sheet for the source.
- Select the type of media being used. The instructions with your fine art paper may suggest a certain media based on your printer manufacturer. If not, choose the media description closest to your paper based on its thickness and whether the surface is glossy or matte. Experiment with different media types for best results.
- Choose the highest print quality available. Different terms describe this option depending on the printer manufacturer, but it will usually be the top or last quality in a list of options.
- Load the paper face-up, as explained in the paper's instruction information. Press "Print." If the image has problems with its contrast or color, you may need to make adjustments and reprint.
How to Compare Printer Paper Quality:
Print this article Comparing printer paper quality is important when deciding which type of paper to use for different print jobs. Many factors can determine the output of digital information on a printer. From text only to colorful artwork, the paper chosen will affect the quality of the printout.
- Instructions
- Determine the final output. When choosing the type of paper, consider how the final printout will be used. For simple text, emails or drafts, standard 20-lb. copier paper will suffice. Artwork for a sales flier, however, requires heavy-weight, glossy photo paper.
- Read your printer's manual. The printer is a key factor when determining which paper to use. Specialty papers, like laser, inkjet, photo and printer/copier paper, each have certain characteristics that work best on different printers. Laser paper better absorbs toner, while inkjet paper produces sharp high-resolution images. There are two basic paper finishes: matte and glossy. A matte finish has a bright white coating---allowing ink to dry quickly. A glossy finish has a shiny smooth texture, best used for photographs and colorful artwork.
- Consider the properties of the paper you choose. Paper has four primary properties. Weight is measured per 500-sheet ream; the heavier the paper is, the less light is transmitted. Brightness is how white the paper appears; a higher number indicates brighter paper. The most commonly used paper is 80 and 100. Opacity is the amount of transparent light filtering through the paper. And smoothness is the texture of the paper. Laser printers use heat and toner; therefore, smoother paper works best. Inkjet printers need textured paper for the water-based ink to dry faster, to prevent bleeding and produce sharper printouts.
- Follow basic rules. For printer/copier paper, weight and brightness are key properties. For inkjet and laser printers, consider the opacity and smoothness of the paper you choose. Select heavier and brighter paper when printing colorful artwork or images.
- Choose the right paper. By planning ahead, you will achieve better results. The paper you choose will not only affect the output of your next quarterly report, but also your printing cost, the wear and tear on your printer and the environment, by reducing paper waste and recycling print materials (i.e., paper, ink cartridges and toner).

05-06-2011- Other Thoughts: The paper works great. I bought it for my home office use, and even on double-sided printing the ink is barely visible through unless I'm in a brightly lit room. I wouldn't try to print any picture or graphics/graphics on it, but for basic text and office/homework use, the paper seems to be good quality.
